Metropolia Bachelor’s Thesis in Laboratory Sciences Receives Special Notice for Analytical Method Development

Bachelor of Laboratory Services Sami Orpana from Metropolia UAS has won the Finntesting Association’s recognition and incentive award which is annually granted to theses in the field of the testing laboratory or in the field to nominated authors of the thesis.

The award was presented on Tuesday 11/17/2015 at the association's autumn seminar. Orpana’s thesis project Liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry method development for short chain carboxylic acids from aqueous and bio-oil based samples (see English abstract here) was carried out in the Research Analytics Team at the Chemistry Department of Neste Oil Research and Development in Porvoo, Finland. The purpose of the project was to develop a LC-MS method for the determination of short chain carboxylic acids in aqueous and bio-oil based samples. The work was supervised by researcher Jyrki Viidanoja from Neste Oil, and principal lecturer Jukka Niiranen from Metropolia UAS. The thesis got particular notice for its expertise in analytical method development.


The Degree Programme in Laboratory Sciences offers also continuing education for professionals in analytical method development (currently only in Finnish).
