Metropolia Masters Students Learn about European Decision Making on a Study Trip to Brussels and Maastricht

Several Metropolia Master’s students from the Master's Degree Programme of Business Development visited Brussels and Maastricht on 7.12.-9.12.2016. The trip was organized in cooperation with Metropolia’s partner institution ZUYD University of Applied Sciences. The theme for the study trip was lobbying and public affairs in practice in the EU. The highlight of the study trip was a visit to the European Parliament, hosted by Ms Lieve Wierinck, MEP.

During the visit, the participants met public affairs professionals from several organizations, for example Business Europe and Hill+Knowlton Strategies. The trip included lectures and a workshop organized by the Faculty of International Business and Communication at ZUYD University of Applied Sciences in Maastricht.

The possibility to participate in a study trip is included in the curriculum of the Master’s Degree Programme in Business Development. This year, 18 students participated in the trip together with Minna Kaihovirta-Rapo, Head of Degree Programme. The concept for the field trip was created by Rick Maijer, Senior Lecturer in EU Affairs and Management at ZUYD. He was accompanied by Lecturer Natasha Gousseva and 8 students from ZUYD.

“An intensive study trip abroad suits Metropolia Master’s students extremely well. They work full time and study in the evenings, so the trip gave us all a good opportunity to get to know each other better while learning new things. This is very important and useful for the students in the future. We were privileged to be able to benefit from the good networks that our partner school ZUYD has. We got to meet professionals with high profiles - and not only in formal meetings but also in a more informal setting during dinner. This was a unique possibility for us all”, Minna Kaihovirta-Rapo sums up the trip.

“This study trip offered us an excellent opportunity for international networking together and gave a deeper understanding of the decision-making processes in the EU. I also enjoyed getting to know my fellow students better during the trip. Overall, this study trip was a fantastic experience!”, says Metropolia Masters' student Hanna Rantanen.

Metropolia Master's education provides excellent international opportunities for students; study trips and international study modules as well as exchange programs strengthen their international competencies.
