Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Finavia start an automated, drivelress electric minibus trial at Helsinki Airport in October 2017. Passengers will be driven between two parking areas with access to Terminal 2. The automated bus service runs from Monday to Friday until 2nd November.
This pilot is part of Finavia's service development which aims at easier traveling. Finavia is testing new technologies for creating the airport of the future. Electric buses are also connected with Finavia's Climate programme for energy-efficient and low emission airports.
The operating pilot service provider Metropolia University of Applied Sciences has experimented in automated, self-driving bus usage in projects such as SOHJOA-6aika. The approach to this pilot goes in hand with Finavia’s as an effort to solve the urban mobility and environmental challenges.
The cost effective, energy efficient, small electric buses can transport up to nine (9) persons. The current strategy of the Finnish Ministry of Transportation and Communication’s allows testing of autonomous vehicles in the actual urban environments. This strategy gives Finland unique piloting possibilities, as legislation allows this type of piloting only in a few countries.
The robobus goes from the front of Lentäjäntie 1 to P5 to parking area 4a/b:n and back. Piloting bus is operating from Monday to Friday from 12 to 14 and from 15 to 17. Finavia's regular parking bus operates normally during the pilot.
The robobus is scheduled to go from Monday to Friday between 12:00-14:00 and 15:00-17:00. Please see Info Page for more information.
