Knowledge Practices Laboratory KP-Lab KP-Lab is a five-year R&D project, which focuses on creating a learning system aimed at facilitating innovative practices of sharing, creating and working with knowledge in education and workplaces. KP-Lab is co-ordinated by University of Helsinki, technological work is leaded by Metropolia and third Finnish partner is Pöyry Plc. The project has 22 partners from 14 countries. Duration: 1.2.2006 - 31.1.2011 Source of funding: EU 6. Framework Program, IST, integrated project (IP) Contact information: KP-Lab's technological co-ordinator Hannu Markkanen E-mail: hannu.markkanen(at)metropolia.fi, tel. +358-40-527 4668 Further information about KP-Lab, please visit www.kp-lab.org 3D in Archaeology The Institute of Art and Design carries out research and product development projects, which create new information and understanding. The Degree Programme in Media is doing research on how 3D simulation could be used as a documentation device in archaeology and building conservation. This is most helpful when examining building fragments and underwater discoveries, and also to disseminate information in an easily understandable format. The research objects include, forexample, the remains of underwater pile dwellings in Estonia and the ruins of Pompeii. As a part of a University of Helsinki interdisciplinary study, 3D Visualisation students have made a simulation of the Marcus Lucretius house in Pompeii. Conservation students are involved in a project concentrating on pigment analysis and conservation of fresco fracments.
