Industrial Management, Masters Programme

  • Previous Application Period 5 March - 10 April 2012

The Master's Degree Programme in Industrial Management focuses on service business management and ICT. The program is conducted in English and the studies can be carried out along with regular work. Working days in the autumn are Thursdays and Fridays (full days), in the spring term 1-2 Fridays per month.

The curriculum is interwoven of three dimensions. Management of services is emphasized over science and engineering. This is the functional dimension. Participants are expected to have work experience, and may be attending this class while in parallel with day job. The sector dimension draws out intuitions on leading and operating in a service business, and business cases are discussed. Services over a variety of sectors are discussed, to illustrate wisdoms that may be adopted or challenged in other sectors. Open boarders for shipping and travel have made international business a part of everyday business in the 21st century. Therefore the cultural anthropological dimension is included to bridge the challenge of globalization and the local culture.

The program content is a mix of three threads. The first, conceptual thread brings insights through readings, articles and theories introduced in the lectures. The second, interpretive thread aims to make sense of the knowledge through the experiences of guest lecturers, service practitioners and peer experience. The third, experiential thread links the gained understandings in discussions. The learning is synthesized into the Master's Thesis, where the participant solves a research problem in a practical research project for the case company. Faculty includes advanced researchers with practical experience and PhD degrees.

The Degree Programme in Industrial Management is one year program with 60 ECTS credits and includes:

  • Principles: Business in a Services Economy, and Business Research Methods (5 credits)
  • Customers, Business Models and Innovation (5 credits)
  • Services in an International Context (5 credits)

Current

For application period 2012-13 the IM programme has gone through a major facelift. Operating since 2006, the IM program has left behind its pre-school stage, and now takes pride in assuring its quality. The reading list is now updated with the most recent publications to allow utilization of best available knowledge. This new knowledge is linked with practical sessions by frequent PhD contributors and external practitioners from industries. The sessions are held in a newly refurbished classroom, which allows group activities, lively discussions and knowledge construction. On student request, we have reframed many individual assignments into group activites this year. We support our busy company participants: our materials are placed online and oral advice is supplemented by written documentation. Our Master's Thesis process provides hands-on help for participants. The outcome of our process was that 24 out of our 30 course participants succeeded to take the Master's degree in 2011.
