Structure of studies
The structure of the curriculum of the Master's Degree Programme in Business Informatics includes five competence areas built into five modules. The four modules, Module 1 through Module 4, are all built to serve the Master's Thesis process in Module 5. More information about the modules.
The first module of master-level professional studies equips the student with an understanding and know-how for doing applied research in/for his organization together with a set of modern and effective tools for developing their respective business concepts and activities.
Advanced professional studies called “Business Intelligence in Management”, is a module consisting of several courses. All courses take a global/international perspective to the issues dealt with. The professional studies include Business Economics, Business Intelligence in MIS, Strategy, Management, Leadership and Innovation and Renewal.
The module “Better Business through Improved ICT” is comprised of three alternative pairs of courses. These include core business operations in theory as well as in practice how to use the essential ICT systems in business management and business development.
Elective Advanced Studies can be chosen from the choices offered by all Master’s degree programmes of Helsinki Metropolia UAS. Master-level courses of other institutions of Higher Education can also be accredited. International partner institutions and networks are worth looking into.
The Master’s Thesis is a long-term process initiated in the very beginning or prior to the studies. The process is started when the necessary methodological and knowledge background is ascertained in a topic seminar. A tripartite agreement is signed between the commissioner/partner representing working life (a company, a network, an R&D project, a public organisation, other), the Master student whose Thesis the project will result in, as well as the University of Applied Sciences giving the necessary guidance to the student. The thesis process typically takes 1.5 to 2 years, and it is supported by certain steps and activities on behalf of the UAS.
Study Period
The Master's Degree Programme in Business Informatics (MiBI) is organized so that its participants can combine studying with full-time work. The length of studies is determined by the entry line through which the student gets accepted. For the Master of Business Administration it is 2,5 years; September 2012 - December 2014 for the 2012 intake.
Contact sessions
Contact sessions are arranged on Thursday evenings (from 17.00 - 20.00) and/or on Fridays (from 9.00 to 16.00), once or twice a month. Occasionally, an intensive weekend session may be arranged. Even these sessions take various forms and approaches. A lot is expected from the participants, a lot is also given by the professionals of business and academics lecturing and leading the sessions. Some sessions take place in the facilities of the business companies participating in the network.
As international cooperation deepens, joint sessions with partner universities will be arranged (intensive weeks, study trips, etc). Study abroad options such as Summer School or Winter School will also be introduced via the international partner network. These are expected to bring about agreements on possible joint or double degrees at a later stage.
