The convergence of digital technologies creates a new challenge for the information society. Along with digitalisation the traditional communication and publishing industries are reshaping their operation and forming international networks. In this new industry there is a growing need for Media Engineering professionals with engineering education combined with expertise in product design, production processes, communication skills and marketing.
Students from different countries and cultures cooperate in a learning environment which includes the most modern technology of networks, media production and teamwork interaction required in projects.
Objectives
The main objective of the Degree Programme in Media Engineering is to give a solid foundation for the engineering profession in the field and to enable continuing professional development after graduation. The programme focuses on technical studies in media technology, computing and data communication while providing also basic knowledge and skills in multimedia related design, production and business subjects.
The Structure and Practice
The BEng degree in Media Engineering studies consists of basic studies, professional studies, optional professional studies, elective studies, industrial placement and Bachelor’s thesis.
Core Requirement Studies provide fundamental knowledge; mathematics, physics, electronics, computing and communication technology, business studies and languages. Professional Studies consist of studies on software engineering, multimedia technology and production, Internet technology, web development, visual design, and electronic services. In addition, students can choose two optional professional modules from a selection. Elective Studies can be freely chosen by the student.
Industrial placement is an important part of the Bachelor of Engineering degree. The total length of the industrial placement required for the completion of the programme is 20 weeks.
The individual engineering project is an extensive research or development work that is carried out during the last year of studies. It is the final step for preparing for the employment. Usually the topic is given by and the work is done for the industry. The project will be documented in written report, Bachelor’s Thesis.
Work Potentials
Media Engineering professionals will work with products and services for information, education, news, entertainment, marketing and advertising. Typically, they will have a career in media companies, software houses, electronic documentation and publishing companies, interactive TV and video producers, telecommunication service providers, open and distance learning institutions. Increasing use of communications in all types of industry, and in service, health care, education and household sectors will open further employment opportunities.
The jobs cover a wide range of positions in product design and development, product support, consulting, and marketing. The studies will also encourage entrepreneurship.
