Metropolia’s Information Technology student Ali Bahrami and his innovative start-up team Give-and-Take. IO have been awarded for the best business idea at Discovery Tuesday 2017 in October.
Discovery Tuesday is an intensive five week startup brainstorming programme, coordinated by Jyväskylä Entrepreneurship Society in collaboration with Jyväskylä Business and Innovation Factory (JBIF). The program is financed by Jykes and the European Union.
Ali Bahrami describes the journey of the business idea as follows:
“My family has had an entrepreneurial attitude always and since moving to Finland in 2012, we have perseveringly been pursuing related leads in order to achieve our dream, building our own business in Finland. I registered for Discovery Tuesday with a hope to find motivated individuals to work together on my predefined idea, which I had for the Metropolia´s innovative course supervised by Principal Teacher Mr. Antti Piironen. Our team chose to work on an idea originally given by Johannes Impiö. I helped the team to develop it by rapid prototyping, preparing the pitch and even finding potential customers. I was planning to follow up with guidelines of doing an innovative project and to test it during the five weeks of Discovery Tuesday program, and possibly be the winner of its competition.”
The business idea in a nutshell is to make use of unused or improperly used screens (mainly TVs) in public indoor spaces.
“We provided a solution for the screens’ owners to use them and monetize a cloud of desirable and selectable content. We provide an interactive experience with a combination of screens and our pocket size device. As a by-product, we connect SMEs and let them be profited from one another”.
Discovery Tuesday made its debut in 2015 when there were forty budding entrepreneurs and six coaches attending the program. This year, there were nine groups in the program. Give-and-Take. IO team consists of students from different backgrounds, home-countries, fields of studies and competences. The winning team was awarded with an access to Slush and will be under JBIF’s professional coaching for moving forward with the idea.
“Our story has just started and our agile strategy for having our MVP (Minimum Viable Product) is being tested in public local places. Johannes Impiö, a student from University of Jyväskylä as a founder and me from Metropolia as a co-founder, are planning to start our company as soon as possible. Oleksiy Kovalenko, also a student from University of Jyväskylä has been our spokesperson and now is producing videos from our product. We are on our early steps to become a company and we have a goal to start broadcasting on over 200 screens in Jyväskylä as our pilot and then capture screens in Helsinki area (over 4000 one) in Q1 of 2018”, says Ali Bahrami.
The Principal Teacher of Degree Programme of Information and Communication Technology (Metropolia) Antti Piironen provided a framework to help students on the development work of Innovation Projects. He naturally takes pride and joy with the accomplishment: “This case shows how an interesting study project with a proper entrepreneurial mindset can be transformed into an excellent business idea."
