Studying your Degree at Metropolia? Internationalise Your Studies!

In Metropolia, international expertise is considered an essential part of professional skills. In international degree programmes you already study in a multicultural environment. In addition, students have numerous possibilities to gain more international experiences and to deepen their intercultural skills during the studies – either at Metropolia or abroad.

Going abroad with Metropolia

You have several options to explore the world and to develop your professional skills abroad.

Student exchange as part of your studies

Students at Metropolia have the possibility to complete part of their studies abroad. Over 500 students choose to go on exchange every year.

Why not join them - an exchange abroad gives you a possibility to learn about yet another culture and at the same time to further develop important skills for your career!

Metropolia has over 350 partner institutions. Depending on your field of study, you can choose Europe, Asia, Oceania, North and South America and Africa as your exchange destination.

Depending on the degree programme, a student exchange usually takes place on the third year of studies.

The length of an exchange is from three months to a year. An exchange student takes part in the regular tuition at the receiving institution. The studies completed abroad will be recognised in your degree at Metropolia.

Students going abroad for a student exchange will receive a grant from the mobility programmes. Students with children and students with special needs can apply for an additional grant in Erasmus+, Nordplus and FIRST programmes. In addition, students entitled to the student financial aid of KELA will receive the aid also during the student exchange.

More information on student exchange in the Oma intranet and from the international coordinator of your field of study.

Work placement abroad

All degrees at Metropolia include a work placement. Students can do a part of or the whole work placement abroad.

An international work placement gives you not only work experience but you also get to develop your professional language and intercultural skills and to gain interesting professional experiences.

Study Trips and Other Short-term International Options

Students can also make shorter excursions abroad as part of their studies. These visits can include for instance intensive programs or projects at partner institutions or trips to professional fairs and seminars, summer schools and international competitions.

In most degree programmes you can also do your Bachelor’s or Master’s Thesis research at an organisation abroad.

International Experiences at Home

Studying in an International Metropolia

Applying to study in one of the English-taught international degree programmes is an excellent way to build up your international competence if you do not have the chance to go abroad yourself. Most degree programmes also welcome exchange students from all around the world.

Degrees at Metropolia include also courses in which you get to explore international perspectives and trends in your field of study, practise multicultural project work and learn about intercultural communication. Furthermore, you have the possibility to attend lectures and workshops given by visiting lecturers and thus gain further insights into the international developments in your professional field.

Developing your Language Skills

Metropolia also offers numerous possibilities to diversify your language skills – not only in Finnish but in several others as well. Some language studies are part of the degree, some are electives. Do make the most out of the language course offering straight from the beginning of your studies, especially if you are planning to apply for a student exchange or to do a work placement abroad.

Get Involved in the International Student Activities

You can also gather international experiences in the student life through the activities organised by the Student Union METKA. For example, you can become a tutor for an exchange student or take part in the development cooperation projects of METKA.

Metropolia also has its own section of the international student association Erasmus Student Network (ESN): ESN Metropolia. You are welcome to join the activities and events organised by ESN Metropolia or take part in the organising committee.
