Juha Mattila, Master of Engineering in Business Informatics
Organizational development tools and ideas for the future through the international Metropolia Master of Engineering, Business Informatics program
Approximately two years ago, I was browsing around the web, looking at finding some or any tools or ideas to resolve some I guess quite typical business problems within my organization. I stumbled on looking at what was going on with Metropolia, as I graduated as B. Sc. in HVAC technologies back 20 years ago in 1997, and did have some plans to continue my studies already 15 years ago, but at that time did not really find anything that interesting or suitable for me to pursue. I work in global product management & marketing role in the pharma industry with over 20 years of experience in engineering, R&D and product management.
My interest was immediately caught by the new international program - Master of Engineering, Business Informatics - that I had not seen before, as the content of the study program was made of courses about research design, action research, organizational development, service design, digitalization, digital marketing and business development – all these topics I was actually looking for, to be able to address my real business problem case and improve my own skills – and all this fit perfectly my needs. From start to finish, I must say I am very pleased with the content and quality of the studies, lecturers and of course my dear fellow students – and had great motivation. At least 90% of the courses content fulfilled my expectations, and I think that is a pretty good match. Looking back 20 years, many things have evolved in the Finnish AMK offering, and I think it has definitively been for the better.
As a direct result to my studies and thesis objective, I think I already begin to see things starting to happen in my organization, as planned. Things that you do – they do matter, if you just want to. Personally, I had no difficulties in simultaneous working, traveling, studying, research and writing for my thesis and family life. When you are motivated, it also helps a lot, I believe. Therefore – I strongly recommend these Metropolia Master's programs to anyone in similar situation, and for companies to support their employees this way giving the opportunity, to get the best out of them and benefit the organizations.
Elena Xydaki, Master of Engineering in Business Informatics
I am Elena Xydaki from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I have been working as an entrepreneur in Finland for more than 10 years. My main business line is exporting graphic art materials to Russia.
Graphic Art industry is shrinking due to digital media presence. I understood that this was the moment for me to react, to start something new and different. I chose Business Informatics Master's Degree Programme as it offers knowledge at the cutting edge of technology development.
Studying was a brilliant experience: all courses were practice-oriented and the atmosphere was very collaborative both from teachers' and students' sides. The studies offered a great network as all the students were already experienced professionals. The most highlighted moments for me were a trip to Berlin as a part of Innovation and Renewal -course as well as Business Economics lectures of lecturer Antti Hovi.
I was lucky to get a chance to write my thesis for one of the most interesting startups in Finland - Jolla Ltd. The title of my thesis is Usability Study for Sailfish Operation System. At that time Jolla's first smartphone powered by Sailfish operating system was released. I was accepted to conduct ten face-to-face interviews and usability testing including video recording and talk aloud protocol for two groups of participants: device owners and potential buyers. Meeting users, having discussions about their experience and following their logic during the task performance let me see the market reaction on a totally new product and develop my marketing skills further.
I would like to thank Metropolia and all the people involved; my class mates and teachers for the collaboration, guidance and support.
