The Mobile Documentary Project Malaysia and Finland responds to the educational needs of the media industry. MoDo is a joint project between Metropolia UAS, Turku University of Applied Sciences and Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur. During the two workshops weeks students produce 20 mobile documentaries on the issues concerning climate change in Helsinki and Kuala Lumpur. The project is mainly funded the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH).
The objectives of the MoDo-project will be realized on the basis of a media sectors’ competence analysis produced by Finnish National Board of Education (Haara & al, 2012 pdf)
Five megatrends stand out:
- population aging,
- technological development,
- changes in economy,
- globalization and
- change of working life.
Six areas of expertise were derived from weak signals, which were considered to be significant growth:
- networking expertise,
- internationalization and local expertise,
- creativity combined with technical expertise,
- social media,
- service expertise and
- environmental expertise.
According to the report, this development trend should be reflected in the teaching and international cooperation of educational institutions to ensure the quality of teaching. (Haara, 2012.) The study also highlighted the multi-frequency of the team, ie the combination of the special skills of the employees. Increased teamwork and networking were seen as requiring the education system to invest in project learning and interaction skills. (Haara, 2012).
The aims of the project are hence international mobility, networking of creative students and professionals, development-oriented co’work, joint study content and cooperation with media companies. In this context, the goal is to further develop the Learning Diving workshop method by incorporating the service design method into the production process.
Collaborative short, joint projects of higher education institutions reflect new types of employment in the field which also require the application of metacognitive skills; continuous adaptation, new learning and understanding of one's own skills.
