Supporting Better Healthcare Through Medical Technology
"Before starting my Master's studies at Metropolia, I was working as a Software Specialist at HUS. Over the years, I have gained extensive experience with healthcare information systems and digital services, but I wanted to deepen my understanding of how technology can support healthcare operations, decision-making, and organizational development.
I chose the Medical Technology specialization because it combines healthcare and technology in a highly practical way. The programme provided valuable insights into digital transformation, healthcare processes, and the challenges of developing technologies that support both healthcare professionals and patients. What appealed to me most was the opportunity to connect academic knowledge with real-world healthcare environments.
The most meaningful part of the programme was my thesis work, which I completed for HUS Information Management. My thesis evaluated the outcomes, effects, and organizational impact of the HOI Operational Management View, a Power BI-based operational reporting solution used to support daily decision-making in hospital wards. Through the study, I examined how data-driven reporting can improve situational awareness, resource allocation, and operational management in one of Finland’s largest healthcare organizations. The project gave me an opportunity to work with a real healthcare development initiative and produce recommendations that can support future improvements in hospital operations.
The programme strengthened not only my technical expertise but also my analytical thinking, research skills, and understanding of healthcare operations. It helped me see digital solutions from a broader perspective and better understand how technology, people, and organizational processes interact. The knowledge and experience gained during the programme has supported my professional growth and helped me take on new responsibilities within healthcare IT.
My advice to future students is to be active and make the most of every opportunity the programme offers. In addition to the formal course content, one of the greatest assets of the programme is the lecturers themselves. They bring extensive practical experience, valuable industry connections, and a wealth of knowledge that cannot be found in textbooks. By actively engaging in discussions, asking questions, and collaborating with lecturers and fellow students, you gain access to insights and perspectives that can have a lasting impact on your professional development.
