Joint application 1, spring 2021

The Finnish joint application is a national application procedure the Finnish education institutions use when selecting new students to general upper secondary schools, vocational institutions and higher education institutions. Please read more about the Finnish application system at Studyinfo.fi.

The joint application for higher education degree programmes offered in English begins on 7 January 2021 at 8 am and ends on 20 January 2021 at 3 p.m. (local time in Finland). Please find more detailed timetable below in section "application timetable".

All information is subject to change until the beginning of the application period (all rights reserved). 

Application process step-by-step

1. Choose your degree programmes of interest 

Check the education offering at Studyinfo.fi and choose 1-6 higher education degree programmes to which you want to apply. Metropolia's degree programmes are listed below in section "Degree programmes".

You do not have to place your chosen degree programmes in order of preference, and you can be offered several study places. For example, if you are accepted to three out of four study programmes on your application, you can choose which place you wish to confirm. Please note, that you cannot change the degree programmes after the application period has ended.

2. Check the degree-programme specific eligibility and admission requirements at Studyinfo.fi

The eligibility and admission criteria may vary depending on the degree programme and therefore, it is important to read carefully the admission criteria for each degree programme you have chosen. The degree-programme specific admission criteria are available at Studyinfo.fi.

3. Check what documents you need to complete the online application at Studyinfo.fi

You need the have the required documents with you when fill in the application. The list of required documents can be found below in section "Required documents".

4. Check if any of your chosen degree programmes require a pre-assignment

Some of degree programmes may require that a pre-assignement must be uploaded to the online application at Studyinfo.fi by the end of the application period. Instructions concerning Metropolia's pre-assignments can be foud below in section "Pre-assignments".

 

5. Submit your online application at Studyinfo.fi before the application period ends

The joint application must be submitted by 20 January 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland)

Make sure that you receive the e-mail confirmation the joint application system sends you automatically within 24 hours from submitting the application. If you do not receive the e-mail confirmation please any of the admission services of your application options.

The e-mail confirmation contains a link to edit your application at Studyinfo.fi. Please note that the application options can be changed during the application period only.

6. Check your e-mail frequently and keep your contact information up-to-date

You will be contacted via e-mail if:

  • your application is found insufficient (you will be given 7 days to complete your application)
  • you are invited to the entrance examination
  • you are offered a study place

7. Get ready for the entrance examination

If the degree programme has an entrance examination you will receive an invitation to the entrance examination via e-mail approximately one week prior to the entrance examination. More information below in section "Entrance examinations".

If you need individual arrangements for the entrance examination due to an injury, illness, reading disability, or other special reason, please read the instructions for applying for individual arrangements for the entrance examination.

 

8. Check the My Studyinfo -service frequently and follow your e-mail

Results of the joint application will published at My Studyinfo -service by 4 June 2021 at the latest. If you are offered a study place, you will also receive an e-mail notification. More information below in section "student selections".

9. Confirm the study place if one is offered to you

The study place must be confirmed by completing the following four steps by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of the student selection:

  1. Accept the study place by using the My Studyinfo -service or the link you have received in the notification of admission e-mail.
  2. Pay the tuition fee if applicable (the invoice will be sent via email within a few days of the admission notification). 
  3. Enroll as present or absent for the academic year by using the My Studyinfo -service or the link you have received in the notification of admission e-mail. NB! If you register as absent you are required to deliver a document proving that you have legal grounds for the absence.
  4. Upload the rest of the documents required to prove eligibility to your online application at Studyinfo.fi, unless you have not yet done so. You can enter the application by using the My Studyinfo -service or the link you have received in the confirmation e-mail.

10. Get ready for the studies

Prepare to study by checking the material for new students. At the webpage you find the dergee spresific information such as starting date and time of the studies and other important information for the beginning of your studies.

Please note! Metropolia’s Master of Engineering double-degree programme in Construction and Real Estate Management has its own separate application period and admission procedure carried out by the partner university.

The above mentioned degree programmes have tuition fees. The fees will concern students who are not citizens of EU/EEA countries and who start their studies in English-taught Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in August 2017 or after that. However, students can be exempted from the tuition fee e.g. on the basis of their residence permits. Read more on Studyinfo article "Am I required to pay tuition fees?".

Required documents

Most of the required documents must be uploaded to the online application at Studyinfo.fi and if not, it has been mentioned in connection with the document. A photo taken with a mobile phone or camera is acceptable.

Please note:

  • The International Baccalaureate certificate does not give eligibility for higher education in Finland. In order to be eligible to apply and applicant must provide a copy an International Baccalaureate diploma awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
     
  • If the document is not in Finnish, Swedish or English language, an official translation into one of these languages must be provided by the deadline given for the document in question.
     
  • Documents delivered after the deadline will not be considered. Possible delays or problems in getting the required certificates in time do not take away your responsibility of delivering all the required documents so that they are received by the  by the deadline.
     
  • The study place is conditional until the polytechnic/ UAS has checked your school and other relevant certificates. Metropolia may withdraw the admission, if you have given false information or do not deliver all the required documents by the deadline.

The following Metropolia's degree programmes are using pre-assignments:

  • Master's degree in Health Business Management
  • Master's degree in Industrial Management
  • Master's degree in Information Technology
  • Master's degree in Procurement
  • Creativity and Arts in Social and Health Fields (CRASH)
  • Master of Social Services and/or Health Care in Osteopathy

The pre-assignments must be uploaded to the online joint application at Studyinfo.fi by the end of the application period (= by 20 January 2021 at 3 p.m. local time in Finland).

Please note! Pre-assignments will be published by the beginning of the application period at the latest.

SAT-scores in student selections

You can apply in joint application to some of Metropolia’s English-language degree programmes with the SAT results without taking an entrance exam. Only the new SAT (taken after March 2016) is acceptable. SAT Subject Test will not be considered. Check the test dates and register at CollegeBoard webpage.

Please note!

  • Reports printed or sent by the applicant him/herself are not acceptable.
  • The official SAT result report must be delivered directly from the test organizer to Metropolia. The code for Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is 6953.
  • The official SAT result report must be received by Metropolia by 10 February 2021.
  • You also need to fill in the national joint application form at Studyinfo during the application period from 7 January 2021 at 8 pm to 20 January 2021 at 3 p.m. (local time in Finland).
  • In addition to the SAT test, applicants can take the entrance examination in order to be considered for both student selection methods. 

Minimum point scores

In Metropolia, the following degree programmes consider SAT scores in their student selections:

Entrance examinations

Instead of (or in addition to) the entrance examination, an applicant can apply to some of Metropolia's English-language Bachelor's degree programmes on the basis of a SAT-test.

During the week 14 or 15, the exact date and time for the entrance exam will be published by the beginning of the application period.

Joint entrance examination with TAMK, SeAMK and Laurea: all eligible applicants, who have informed in their applications that they have at least level B1 Finnish language skills, will be invited to the entrance examination.

Bachelor of Social Services in Social Services

Will be published by the beginning of the application period.

Metropolia's entrance examination: all eligible applicants, who have informed in their applications that they have at least level B1 Finnish language skills, will be invited to the entrance examination.

Master of Business Administration in Business Informatics

Master of Engineering in Business Informatics

Metropolia's entrance examination: all eligible applicants who have informed in their applications that they have at least level B1 Finnish language skills (European language levels - Self Assessment Grid) and who have completed the pre-assignment in an acceptable level will be invited to the entrance examination.

Metropolia's entrance examination: all eligible applicants, who have completed the pre-assignment in an acceptable level, will be invited to the entrance examination.

Master of Engineering in Industrial Management

No entrance examination, only pre-assignment.

No entrance examination, student selections will be made on the basis of pre-assignments.

Master of Engineering in Information Technology

No entrance examination, only pre-assignment.

No entrance examination, student selections will be made on the basis of pre-assignments.

Master of Health Care in Osteopathy

Will be published by the beginning of the application period.

Metropolia's entrance examination: all eligible applicants who have uploaded the pre-assignment to their applications at Studyinfo.fi by the end of the application period will be invited to the entrance examination.

Master of Business Administration in Procurement

No entrance examination, only pre-assignment.

No entrance examination, student selections will be made on the basis of pre-assignments.

Degree programme specific entrance examination instructions and material will be published at the Studyinfo.fi by beginning of the application period at the latest.

 

Student selections

Results of the joint application will published by 4 June 2021 at the latest. By this day all applicants will be sent an e-mail notifying the admission result. If you have Finnish online banking credentials, a Finnish electronic ID-card or mobile certificate can check your results at My Studyinfo -service.

You may receive a different result for different programmes: accepted, on reserve list, failed or cancelled.  You can be accepted to several degree programmes and you can choose which place you wish to confirm. However please note that you can accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term.

If you are accepted, you must confirm the study place place by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public, otherwise the stud place will be cancelled. More information on confirming the study place can be found at Studyinfo.fi.

The reserve list status will be valid until 2 August 2021 at 3 p.m. (local time in Finland), after which no applicants placed on reserve list can be granted admission.

Please note that the study place is conditional until the polytechnic/ UAS has checked your school and other relevant certificates. Metropolia may withdraw the admission, if you have given false information or do not deliver all the required documents by the deadline.

A person who has applied to become a student of Metropolia may present a written appeal to the Legal Protection Board of Metropolia within fourteen (14) days as of the publication date of the admissions results. For more information please contact the Admission Services (contact details of the Admission Services) and read the appeal instructions.

Confirming the study place after acceptance

  1. Accept your chosen study place
    You can be accepted to several degree programmes and you can choose which place you wish to confirm. However please note that you can accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term. When you have been accepted to a study programme, you will receive an email. You need to accept the study place by the given deadline or you will lose your place. Applicants admitted by 4 June 2021 must accept their study places by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) and applicants admitted after 4 June 2021 must confirm their study places within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public at 3 pm (local time in Finland). Accepting a study place is a binding choice, and you cannot cancel or change your choice later. When you accept a study place bindingly, all your other study programmes will automatically be cancelled. You can accept the offered study place with the link in the email that you have received. If you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card, you can confirm the offered study place in the My Studyinfo -service.
     
  2. Pay the tuition fee if applicable
    The tuition fee will concern all students who are not citizens of EU/EEA countries and who start their studies in English-taught Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. Invoice will be sent via e-mail within few days from the notification of admission. Students can be exempted from the tuition fee (e.g. on the basis of certain residence permits).
     
  3. Enroll for the academic year as present or absent
    The enrollment can be made only after the study place has been accepted and the possible tuition fee paid. It is not possible to start the studies before the enrollment. NB! If you register as absent you are required to deliver a document proving that you have legal grounds for the absence. Further instructions will be published later.
     
  4. Sign the Student Agreement if applicable
    If you are not a citizen of an EU/EEA country and you are starting your studies in one of Metropolia's English-taught Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes, you must sign the Student Agreement sent you via e-mail and deliver it to Metropolia’s Student and Admission Services by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public at 3 pm (local time in Finland) . The Agreement concerns Metropolia University of Applied Sciences tuition fees and scholarships and specifies the rights and obligations of all parties, and the terms under which the student may receive a scholarship for his/her studies at the Programme. For more information please contact Metropolia's Student and Admission Services.
     
  5. Deliver the documents required for confirming the admission
    Deliver copies of the certificates giving eligibility for the degree programme in question by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public at 3 pm (local time in Finland), unless you already have attached them previously to the application. It is not necessary to deliver copies of the qualifications, which have already been downloaded to the application in question. Certificates are uploaded to the joint application at Studyinfo. You can enter the application via the same link you used for accepting the study place at Studyinfo or by using the My Studyinfo -service. Admission is conditional until Metropolia’s Student and Admission Services have checked all the relevant certificates. Please note that it is not necessary to submit a certificate for the information displayed on the Finnish national Koski service (check your data at the Koski service). Starting the studies

All information on when, where and how to start the studies is available in page Information for New Student. Instructions will not be sent directly to new students.

Study certificates, student discount documents, user ID and password etc. can be given to you on the first day of your studies (orientation days) at the earliest. Until then you can use your acceptance letter in order to verify your study place e.g. when applying for student housing, visa or residence permit.

By downloading the Tuudo mobile app, you can use various Metropolia web services easily on your smart phone. By using Tuudo's student ID you can also get VR, HSL, Matkahuolto and Kela student discounts. Tuudo is free for all Metropolia students.

Please note, finding suitable accommodation in Helsinki area can be challenging. Therefore, apply accommodation right away after receiving the acceptance letter. You can either apply accommodation from HOAS or from the private market.

It is imperative that you attend the orientation days at the beginning of the studies. Starting your studies late can seriously affect the progress of your studies.
