Qualification training for midwives with a degree completed outside the EU and EEA

For whom?

This training is for you if:

• you live in Finland
• you have completed a midwifery degree (Bachelor or Diploma) outside the EU/EEA
• you will apply for the right to work as a midwife in Finland from the Finnish Supervisory Agency, OR you have already received a decision on additional studies from the Finnish Supervisory Agency
• you have sufficient Finnish language skills (at least level A2–B1)

How does the training progress?

1. Initial assessment
   Your previous midwifery education and competence are reviewed.
2. Personal study plan (PSP; HOPS in Finnish)
   A personal study and qualification plan is prepared.
3. Studies
   If needed, you complete studies according to your personal study plan. If necessary, your Finnish language skills are strengthened with Finnish language studies.
4. Competence verification
5. Qualification / authorisation (Finnish Supervisory Agency)
   You apply for midwifery practice rights.

Teaching is delivered as blended learning. This means you study partly online and partly on campus. Contact teaching takes place at Metropolia’s Myllypuro Campus in Helsinki. You can also study alongside work.

What does the training include?

According to your personal study plan, the training includes theoretical studies and clinical placements. Theoretical studies cover social and health care legislation and ethics, pharmacotherapy and clinical nursing, as well as midwifery-specific content.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is Finnish. Successfully completing the studies requires Finnish language skills at least at level A2–B1. The language proficiency levels (A–C) are described on the Europass website.

Selection

Selection is based on an interview. Only eligible applicants are invited to an interview.
In the interview, the applicant’s Finnish language skills are assessed both orally and in writing.

You can be selected if you have:

• a midwifery degree from outside the EU/EEA
• Finnish language skills at least at level A2–B1

Fees

The cost depends on the studies you complete:

• Theoretical studies: 25 euros / ECTS credit
• Clinical placements: 45 euros / ECTS credit

If your employer pays for your qualification training, you provide your employer’s invoicing details when registering for the study units.
You pay yourself all fees charged by the Finnish Supervisory Agency, as well as document-related costs such as translations, certifications and similar fees, and any vaccination costs.
