Would you like to be involved in developing safe food products or learn how to brew beer?

In the Degree Programme in Food and Biotechnology, you will graduate as an engineer. The studies combine chemistry, biotechnology, food science and engineering. The programme provides a deep understanding of food production prosesses, safety, and quality control. Beer brewing is particularly an interesting example that combines traditional methods with modern technologies.

The core of the programme is sustainable production, which is key to manufacturing many products essential for wellbeing and the functioning of society.

We combine theory with hands-on practice. Teaching in laboratory facilities gives you a strong foundation in various methods and techniques.

Mode of Studies

During the first year, you build a solid foundation for engineering studies, gaining strong scientific and technical skills. In the second year, you deepen your knowledge in core engineering studies. In the third and fourth years, you specialize in food and biotechnology and complete your thesis in collaboration with a company in the field.

Studies are mainly conducted as daytime studies from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The programme includes contact teaching, laboratory work, exercises, project work, and independent study.

Contents of the Bio and Food technology major

In this major, you dive into food product development and the world of biotechnology. From baking bread to brewing beer, humans have long utilized microbes and biotechnology – today, the possibilities are limitless.

  • Develop new products: You will take part in product development projects and create innovative food products that reshape the way we eat and enjoy food.
  • Harness the power of nature: Explore biological materials and processes. Learn how microbes and biotechnology can be utilized for sustainable and innovative food production.
  • Safety and quality first: Ensure that food is safe and of high quality. Learn microbiological and production hygiene methods to control and prevent harmful microbes.
  • Optimize production: Develop your skills in designing and optimizing food production processes. Solve challenges related to raw material availability, cost-efficiency, and environmental friendliness.
  • Research and analyze: Learn to combine theory and practice by designing experiments and analyzing results using statistical methods. This enables you to make informed decisions and further improve products.
