What are path studies?

Path studies are Open UAS studies that allow you to complete the first courses of a degree programme without being a degree student yet. They give you the chance to study together with degree students and experience the programme in practice.

In Smart Industry, the path studies consist of three courses (15 ECTS) from the Master of Engineering in Smart Industry curriculum. The studies are completed during the spring semester.

After you successfully complete the path studies and meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for the Smart Industry Master’s Programme in the following autumn intake through the Open UAS application route.

Who are these studies for?

Smart Industry path studies (15 ECTS) are suitable for you if

  • you are interested in Master’s level studies in Smart Industry and the field in general,
  • you hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree or another higher education degree in technology (minimum 240 ECTS),
  • you wish to continue directly to Master’s level studies after graduation, even if you have not yet accumulated the required two years of work experience (this requirement must be fulfilled when applying for the degree studies).

Please note: Path students are responsible for ensuring they have sufficient English skills (recommended level at least B2). No separate language test is organized. The studies are suitable also for Finnish-speaking students. However, the language of instruction is English, and you will study in an international student group.

Content of the studies

During the spring semester 2026, path students will complete the following courses (15 ECTS):

  • Cloud Technologies (5 ECTS)
  • Data Analytics and Optimization (5 ECTS)
  • Applied Research and Development Skills (5 ECTS)

Study format and implementation

The studies are carried out as blended learning, which combines online studies, independent study, and contact teaching at Myyrmäki Campus. Regular participation and independent study are required. Classes are conducted in English, and you will be part of an international student group.

Path students study together with degree students and gain valuable experience of an international learning environment.

Language and other requirements

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree in engineering or another suitable field
  • Work experience requirement (two years after graduation) must be fulfilled when applying later for the degree studies, but it can be accumulated during or after path studies
  • Sufficient English skills for higher education studies (minimum recommended level B2)
  • A personal laptop is required for studies

Enrollment is carried out through Metropolia’s Open UAS enrollment system.

Enrollment period: 4.11.2025 from 10:00 onwards
Selection method: Places are filled in the order of enrollment.

Before enrolling, carefully read the Open UAS study guidelines and the payment and cancellation terms.
