Metropolia launches a new Bachelor's Degree Programme in Sustainable Fashion Business Management

Published on:

The fashion and textile industry is undergoing a profound transformation. Consumer behaviour is changing, digital business models are reshaping traditional ways of operating, and sustainability requirements continue to become more demanding. At the same time, companies are looking for professionals who combine business expertise with sustainability and a deep understanding of the global fashion industry.

To meet this growing demand, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is launching a new English-taught Bachelor's degree programme, Sustainable Fashion Business Management. The programme will begin in autumn 2027 and is primarily aimed at international students, while also welcoming Finnish applicants interested in the fashion industry. The first intake is planned for approximately 20 students.

The programme is designed to educate future professionals who can develop fashion and textile businesses in a sustainable, innovative and commercially successful way. Students will gain expertise in fashion business, international commerce, sustainability, data-driven decision-making, branding and consumer insights.

The fashion industry needs business professionals

According to Senior Lecturers Päivi Lonka and Pauliina Westman, who have led the development of the programme, Finland has an excellent reputation for fashion and design education, but there is a growing need for professionals with strong business expertise.

"Finland is known for its design talent, but we need more professionals who understand how to build internationally successful and profitable fashion businesses. This degree programme focuses on turning creative ideas, products and brands into sustainable business growth," say Lonka and Westman.

The programme has been developed in close collaboration with companies, industry organisations and higher education partners to address current competence needs. The future of the fashion industry requires professionals who understand business, consumers, global supply chains and more sustainable ways of operating.

Sustainability is about much more than materials

Although sustainability is highlighted in the programme's name, the focus extends far beyond environmental issues alone.

"We want students to examine the entire fashion ecosystem critically. Sustainability is not simply about choosing different materials—it is about making better decisions throughout the entire value chain, from consumer behaviour and sourcing to production planning," explain Lonka and Westman.

The studies also emphasise data analytics, trend forecasting, consumer behaviour and business development. The aim is to educate professionals who can create commercially successful solutions while helping the industry address its environmental and social challenges.

A unique programme in Finland

Metropolia's new degree programme represents a significant addition to Finnish higher education. According to Lonka and Westman, there are very few comparable English-taught Bachelor's programmes available in Finland.

"Fashion business programmes exist around the world, but a degree that combines sustainability and business management in this way is highly distinctive. Similar programmes are rare not only in Finland but also elsewhere in Europe."

The programme is also the first English-taught fashion degree programme offered at Metropolia's Arabia Campus in Helsinki.

Strong connections with working life

The programme is delivered as full-time, on-campus studies at the inspiring Arabia Campus. Students will participate in real-life projects, collaborate with companies and complete practical assignments closely connected to working life.

One of the programme's key objectives is to build an extensive international network of fashion companies and industry experts. Teaching will also involve professionals who are actively working in the fashion business, ensuring that students gain up-to-date knowledge and practical insights throughout their studies.

Graduates will be well prepared for careers in fashion business development, brand management, commercial operations, sustainability and circular economy, sourcing and procurement, supply chain management, marketing, or entrepreneurship.
