When Elviira Ahmavuori and Anzelika Karpova decided to apply for further studies after high school, they chose Metropolia thanks to its modern campus, great location, and the strong positive feeling they got during the application process. Now, as graduation approaches, they look back on their academic journey with satisfaction.

Hands-On Learning and Internships

For the students, the best part of the public health nurse program is its versatility and close ties to working life. In lab sessions, they practice the same skills that are needed in the workplace, and internships have given them valuable tools for the future.

"Besides gaining valuable experience, internships are a great way to showcase your abilities and get your foot in the door for future job opportunities," Ahmavuori explains.

Simulations and group work also structure daily life.

"You never get bored—there’s always something to do, and working together helps move things forward," Ahmavuori says. Karpova nods in agreement: "Group work really is a big part of everyday life."

Ahmavuori also has fond memories of her student exchange:

"I was on exchange in Athens for two and a half months during autumn 2023. I did pediatric nursing internships there, as well as a home care placement. Everything was very well organized by the school, and I got a lot of help from Katariina Alava both academically and with practical matters. The exchange was a truly educational experience and a great opportunity to see the field in another country. I definitely recommend everyone to go on exchange!"

Support and Encouragement from Teachers

According to the students, Metropolia’s lecturers are genuinely on the students’ side.

"You can always ask for help, and they’re flexible when work commitments come up," says Karpova. Ahmavuori adds, "The teachers do their best for us and really care."

New Perspectives from Projects and Work

Studies aren’t limited to lectures and internships. Anzelika especially remembers an entrepreneurship course at the Turbiini Accelerator, where they explored how nursing and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand. Both have also worked alongside their studies—and found it beneficial.

"Working has brought experience we can use in our studies, and at the same time, it’s a nice counterbalance to studying," they both say.

Community and Campus Life

There is a warm atmosphere in the classroom. Friendships formed already at the beginning of their studies, and many students spend time together outside of school as well. The campus facilities support studying: group rooms can be reserved, and simulation days are challenging but also help bring the group closer together.

"If you remember to view simulations as learning situations, you can get a lot out of them," says Karpova.

An Open Future

Although graduation is near, both students are keeping their options open for the future. Karpova is especially interested in maternity and child health clinics or school health care, while Ahmavuori is considering a career working with children or in occupational health care after further studies. Their double degree also enables them to work as registered nurses.

A Competitive Degree

The value of the degree is evident already during the studies.

"I’ve been invited to interviews and have secured jobs," Ahmavuori says. Karpova adds, "It has been easy to get internship placements, which has really helped make the transition to working life smoother."

They have a clear message for future applicants: Metropolia’s public health nursing studies are ideal for those who want to become healthcare professionals and are looking for something more alongside the registered nurse degree. This qualification especially opens doors to daytime career opportunities.
