Transport accounts for a significant portion of urban carbon dioxide emissions. The international Cycle4Climate project aims to reduce these emissions by increasing the share of cycling as a primary mode of transport:
- The project will implement physical and social behavioral interventions aimed to encourage a shift toward more sustainable transportation, particularly cycling.
These mobility-focused behavioral interventions will be implemented in four areas:- Keilaniemi-Otaniemi-Tapiola (Espoo)
- Sörby-Urfjäll (Gävle)
- Tornakalns-Ziepniekkalns (Riga)
- traffic area surrounding the river (Pärnu)
- The project will monitor the effectiveness of tested solutions using, among other methods, pre- and post-intervention CO2 measurements.
- Insights from the monitoring data and learnings gained from the intervention implementation will be synthesized in the form of an intervention toolbox consisting of guidelines for effective solutions and interventions in promoting cycling in urban settings.
- A key focus of the project is to increase the visibility and usage of existing and new cycling infrastructure and services, utilizing social marketing and other strategies.
The Cycle4Climate project is a collaborative effort involving Metropolia, the City of Espoo, the Municipality of Gävle, and the project’s main coordinator, University of Gävle (Sweden), as well as the City of Riga, Riga Technical University (Latvia), the City of Pärnu, and the University of Tartu (Estonia).
By combining research, practice, and co-creation, the project aims to foster year-round cycling as a sustainable urban mobility option.
Metropolia's Role in the Project
- Metropolia leads the work package focused on designing and implementing cycling interventions and coordinates intervention evaluations across project countries, with each city responsible for its local interventions.
- Supporting the City of Espoo in the implementation of local interventions, applying design methods to facilitate the co-creation of experiments and carrying out related learning activities.
- Acting as an expert partner in planning project communications and hosting the project’s annual event in early spring 2025 in Espoo.
- Leveraging design and communication expertise to produce and disseminate project outcomes (the intervention toolkit).
Project duration: 1 June 2024 – 30 November 2027
