2,200 Graduates Celebrated at Metropolia’s Spring 2025 Graduation Ceremonies

Published on

At Metropolia’s Spring 2025 graduation ceremonies, approximately 2,200 students are being celebrated across the fields of culture, business, social services and health care, and technology. The graduation celebrations are held over four different days on Metropolia’s campuses, together with the graduating students and their loved ones.

Of the 2,200 graduates, 1,800 have completed a bachelor’s degree and 400 a master’s degree. These numbers are preliminary, as the total number of spring graduates will continue to be updated until August.

Graduation ceremonies took place on May 23, May 30, and June 6 at the Myllypuro Campus, on May 31 at the Myyrmäki Campus, and on June 6 at the Arabia Campus.

Friends and fellow students Vili Salmi and Topi Tuomivaara graduated today as land surveying engineers.

Switching Careers to Become a Land Surveying Engineer

Vili Salmi, who graduated from Metropolia as a land surveying engineer, says he’s feeling great on graduation day. Salmi is a career changer, originally trained as a plumber.

"I'm very happy that I decided to switch careers and study land surveying at Metropolia. When I started my studies four years ago, I moved from Porvoo to Helsinki. My interest in land surveying began during my military service — I became fascinated with directions, distances, and maps.”

During his first year, Salmi focused solely on his studies, and since then, he has had steady work in the field alongside his education. He praises the facilities for land surveying studies at Metropolia.

“Myllypuro Campus offers excellent facilities: there’s a basement space where students can practice surveying. I’ve learned about topics like land use and property technology. Surveying and mapping techniques turned out to be even more interesting than I expected. Beyond the academic content, I’ve also made good friends and gotten to know many people.”

According to Salmi, studying at Metropolia has allowed a lot of independence. Fellow students come from diverse backgrounds and situations, and help is always available from both teachers and classmates when needed.

His post-graduation plans are already set. This summer, Salmi will continue working at his current job with the City of Helsinki, and in the autumn, he will begin a Master’s degree in Geoinformatics at Aalto University.

Metropolia Foundation Awards Scholarships to Graduates

During the May and June 2025 graduation ceremonies, the Metropolia Foundation was once again pleased to award recognition scholarships to students for outstanding academic performance, excellent thesis work, entrepreneurial spirit, and contributions to a positive student community.

The majority of both the Foundation’s own graduation scholarships and named scholarships donated by various sponsors were again awarded to engineering students and students in construction site management. Among the new named scholarships were two awards from the Perel Group’s Student Support Foundation for electrical engineering students, and the Provina scholarship for the clothing and fashion industry. As in previous years, scholarships were awarded in the names of Elomatic and EMC, as well as the Henry Ford Foundation, Reijo Rautauoma, the Support for Vehicle Inspection sector, the Juho Vainio Foundation for Healthy Building, the Kiinko Real Estate Scholarship, and the Risto Mäenpää scholarship for lighting technology students.

A particularly positive development has been the growing variety of named scholarships, now covering nearly all fields of study at Metropolia. Around twenty recognitions were awarded in the field of social services and health care, and approximately twenty-five named scholarships in the cultural sector. A new scholarship donor this spring was Terveystalo.

Many companies and organizations have recognized the opportunity to stand out in a positive way by welcoming new professionals into the field through scholarships. The impact of a scholarship is significant.

Many young students graduated from Metropolia who would have deserved recognition, but whose fields currently lack a dedicated fund or targeted donations from the Foundation. Even a small donation to the scholarship fund is a meaningful gesture that motivates graduates as they step into working life.

Tuire Ranta-Meyer, Director of the Metropolia Foundation, encourages donations toward scholarships. Anyone interested in contributing is welcome to contact her directly. More information about the Metropolia Foundation can be found at: metropolia.fi/tukisaatio.
