Change negotiations concluded at Metropolia: up to 40 positions to be reduced
The change negotiations initiated at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences on 12 February 2026 concluded on 6 March 2026. Following the negotiations and the decisions made, Metropolia will reduce up to 40 positions.
The changes aim to achieve permanent savings of 4 million euros and to strengthen the conditions for research, development and innovation (RDI) activities. The savings are intended to improve the university of applied sciences’ financial sustainability and safeguard the long-term development of operations in a changing funding environment.
At the same time, Metropolia will renew its organizational structure by clarifying the structure of its research, development and innovation activities and strengthening the conditions for commercial RDI activities. The objective is to improve the profitability, performance and impact of operations and to ensure that resources and responsibilities support Metropolia’s strategic goals better.
The negotiations were initiated by the need to strengthen the financial foundation of RDI activities. In recent years, the current organization has generated a significant deficit after overhead costs. As government funding decreases, the financial performance of RDI activities will play an increasingly important role in the university of applied sciences’ overall funding.
“The situation is challenging for Metropolia and for our staff. However, these changes are necessary to strengthen our financial position and ensure the sustainability of our RDI activities. Our goal is to build an even more impactful and financially stronger Metropolia for the future,” says President, CEO Riitta Konkola.
Metropolia will examine redeployment and training opportunities for employees at risk of redundancy in accordance with the Employment Contracts Act. Support will be provided to personnel during the transition.
The changes don’t affect the progress of students’ studies. Metropolia will continue its research, development and innovation activities in line with its strategy together with working life partners and collaboration networks.
