Metropolia launches new research project on digital twins and the metaverse – Business Finland grants significant research funding

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ research project Metadata to Metaverse (MD2MV) has received Co-Research funding from Business Finland. The 32-month project focuses on metaverse technologies, digital twins, and data flows in the built environment. The total budget of the project is EUR 1.57 million, of which Business Finland funds more than EUR 1.25 million and participating companies contribute over EUR 200,000.
Led by Metropolia, the research project develops new ways to utilize digital twins, urban data, and metaverse technologies in collaboration with companies and cities. The objectives are to produce knowledge about the built environment, refine the latest research data into practical solutions, create models for shared practices between different stakeholders, and test the use of metaverse technologies as part of a shared urban platform.
“Business Finland’s Co-Research funding enables a significant step towards the practical adoption of digital twin and metaverse technologies. It provides a strong foundation for advancing research and supports companies in developing new business opportunities in smart urban environments,” says Harri Hahkala, Project Manager and Metropolia’s Technology Manager.
At Metropolia, the research project is carried out in collaboration between the Smart and Creative City innovation hub and the Helsinki XR Center, combining expertise in urban development and immersive technologies. In addition to Metropolia, the consortium includes the City of Helsinki and 13 companies: Benete, Eeneman, Finpeda, Make a bim, Haltian, Sova3D, Plainview, Polku.io, Sitowise, Granlund, Skanska, Helen and ABB.
The project is led by Principal Lecturer Seppo Törmä from Metropolia’s school of Real Estate and Construction. Harri Hahkala, Technology Manager at the Smart and Creative City innovation hub, serves as Project Manager, and Santeri Saarinen, Research Manager at the Helsinki XR Center, acts as Research Director.
