BIMOK – Competence Roadmap

The growing adoption of digitalization and Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the construction sector sets new requirements for the skills of company personnel as well as for education in the field. Currently, companies do not always systematically identify the level and needs of their own BIM competencies, and workplace demands do not always align with the curricula of educational institutions. This skills gap and the resulting mismatch hinder productivity, innovation, and the advancement of digitalization throughout the construction industry. Objective

The objective of the project BIMOK – Competence Roadmap is to strengthen the abilities of construction companies and educational institutions to meet the increasing skill requirements posed by digitalization and BIM. The project promotes the identification, evaluation, and systematic development of BIM competencies in both companies and educational organizations.

A practical guide will be created for companies to systematically assess and identify areas for development in their BIM expertise. Simultaneously, the extent to which current BIM education and qualification frameworks meet the needs of working life will be evaluated, and concrete solutions will be developed to bridge the skills gap between education and the sector.

Results

The results of the project will be compiled into a visual roadmap and clear recommended actions that support the strategic development of skills in the construction sector and teach a methodical approach to improving both staff and student readiness for digital construction.

The implementation of the project is based on close collaboration with companies, educational institutions, and stakeholders in Helsinki-Uusimaa Region, as well as interactive development through workshops, surveys, and pilots. Broad communication and networking ensure that good practices and developed tools become embedded in industry routines.

As a result of the project, companies and educational institutions will have access to clear models for measuring and developing BIM competencies; education in the field will be better aligned with actual workplace needs, and the digitalization of the entire construction sector will progress according to a jointly agreed development path.

Overall, the project will increase the competitiveness of the sector, strengthen interaction between education and working life, and support the development of a sustainable and smart-built environment for the future.

The Project as Part of a Broader BIM Development Program

The BIMOK – Competence Roadmap Project is the first part of a planned sequence of initiatives, namely the BIMOK – Building Information Modeling Competence Development Program. The objective of this program is to broadly and sustainably develop BIM and digitalization skills and teaching within the construction sector, in close cooperation with companies and educational institutions.

Through several independent projects, the program aims to more strongly integrate BIM competence into degrees and professional qualifications, and to build a structure and system for the recognition and validation of skills. In this way, requirements for BIM expertise are established, and competencies can be classified in a manner compatible with international standards.

Project in a Nutshell

The project BIMOK – Competence Roadmap is co-funded by the European Union; the funding authority is Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council. The project is implemented by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences from October 1, 2025 – September 30, 2027.
