LUME (Creatives in the Web3 Age) was a development project that explored how emerging technologies are reshaping the creative industries, their business models, education and professional practice.
Starting from technologies such as Web3, DAOs, NFTs, decentralised finance (DeFi), metaverses and digital ownership, the project examined how rapidly evolving technologies are reshaping creative work, business models, education and professional practice. As the project progressed, the focus expanded from individual technologies to understanding how the creative industries can respond to continuous technological change.
LUME brought together creative professionals, educators, students and businesses to explore new opportunities, develop future-oriented competences and strengthen the ability to navigate emerging technologies collaboratively.
LUME was based on the preliminary study Creative Industries in the Metaverse, which identified significant gaps in the digital competences needed for the next generation of creative work. The study also highlighted the need to rethink education and professional development in response to technological transformation.
Although the project has now concluded, its results remain openly available.
The LUME website brings together the project's key publications, learning materials, facilitator's handbook, webinars, podcasts and other resources developed throughout the project.
One of the project's most enduring outcomes is the LUME Blog, featuring more than 20 expert blog posts on Web3, digital culture, pedagogy, emerging technologies and the future of the creative industries. Together, these articles document the project's collective learning journey and continue to support discussion around technological change and innovation in the creative sector.
Although LUME began as a Web3 project, its lasting contribution lies in strengthening the creative sector's ability to explore, understand and apply emerging technologies. More importantly, it fostered the confidence to face technological change together.
The development work is carried out by domestic universities of applied sciences specializing in cultural production: Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (coordinator), Arcada, Humak University of Applied Sciences (HUMAK), and Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. Additional support for impact and embedding new expertise is provided by Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK).
