The Smart Buildings in Smart Communities (Älykkäät kiinteistöt älykkäissä yhteisöissä) project focuses on developing expertise in intelligent electricity use and building technology from individual buildings to entire blocks, utilizing artificial intelligence, digitalization, and community-based learning. The project builds on the results of the Management of Property Data and IoT Solutions (STEK Kiinteistötiedon hallinta) project run in 2020-2024, and is funded by STEK ry. The project runs from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2028.
The goal of the project is to develop Myllypuro's Smart Campus into a versatile RDI and learning environment and to create new solutions for building interfaces, energy efficiency, and data utilization in collaboration with companies and research networks. The certified campus is being developed as a generic platform for intelligent building data solutions, applicable to residential, hotel, and hospital environments.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, and Lifelong Learning
The project will develop AI-based electrical and building technology solutions, digital twins, and data visualization methods. The aim is to bring technology into practical use through education and collaboration. The built environment serves as a research and modeling platform for improving energy efficiency, enabling demand-side flexibility, and optimizing and forecasting electrical systems.
Metropolia's Smart Campus is being developed towards achieving Platinum level in the Smart Building Certificate, with a broad partnership network being formed around it to support sustainable property development and community-driven.
Impact on Education and Research
The project’s results will be reflected in new learning solutions across all levels of education. The Myllypuro campus will serve as a testbed where students, researchers, and companies can develop solutions in real-world conditions. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of the field, promote lifelong learning, and produce content for continuing education as well as for primary and secondary education.
