Would you like to study emergency care in bilingual degree programme?

This bilingual emergency care degree programme leads to a UAS degree. You will graduate as both paramedic nurse and registered nurse, which meets the requirements of the European Union Professional Qualification Directives. You will begin your studies in English without Finnish language requirement. Finnish language is integrated in the courses from the beginning of the studies. The programme is also suitable for Finnish speakers who wish to study in English and in an international and multicultural degree programme.

As a Paramedic Nurse you will work in a people-oriented profession

Could I be a Paramedic Nurse?

A paramedic nurse’s profession may be for you if:

  • You can act quickly and rationally under pressure
  • You have good interaction skills and the ability to empathize with your customers' life situations.
  • You have good psychological and physical health.
  • You are cooperative and motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team

As a paramedic nurse and a registered nurse, you are expected to have the following skills, which are learned during your studies:

  • The ability to organise your own work and take responsibility
  • The ability to anticipate and make independent decisions
  • Good communication skill
  • Strong theoretical and clinical skills
  • The ability to work with others as a part of multiprofessional team

As a paramedic nurse, you can work in several different areas, such as:

  • ambulance
  • emergency room
  • high dependency units
  • intensive care unit

A degree in emergency care also provides an opportunity to work:

  • in acute care organizations and companies
  • in various educational and project positions
  • as an independent entrepreneur

In addition to emergency care competence, the graduate paramedic nurse is also qualified as registered nurse with strong skills in general nursing which provides you excellent and varied opportunities to work as a registered nurse both in Finland and internationally:

  • in primary health care, for example in home care and hospital wards
  • in specialised healthcare, for example in hospital wards
  • in the private sector in health and welfare services

How will you study?

The studies consist of theoretical studies, clinical skills labs and simulations, multidisciplinary innovation studies, language studies and bachelor´s thesis. Approximately one-third of the program consists of clinical practice in a variety of health care and acute care settings with patient contact.

You will begin the studies in English without the Finnish language proficiency requirement. The role of Finnish as a language of instruction strengthens as the studies proceed. During the studies, you can either start learning Finnish from the basics or continue the studies from your own starting level. Finnish language is integrated in the courses from the beginning of the studies. If your first language is not Finnish, the elective studies in your curriculum will be Finnish language studies. If your first language is Finnish, you can select also other elective studies. As a student you must be motivated and committed to study Finnish to reach the required proficiency.

Various teaching and learning methods are applied. At the Myllypuro campus you will study in internationally unique learning environments, including highly advanced simulation spaces . In the simulation hospital, you can practise a wide range of nursing skills independently in skills workshops and under the guidance of a teacher. The simulation facilities are similar to those found in a real health care environment. We also have a simulation ambulance that you can practice driving. You will also study and learn in Hymy Village: well-being and health services at Myllypuro campus. Some theoretical studies take place online. The studies include a lot of practice in authentic health care environments.

Internationalization

You will study in a multicultural group of students and teachers, with English and Finnish as teaching languages. You will have the chance to participate in international activities like projects and joint teaching by international partners. International student exchange is also a possibility.

Further education opportunities

Paramedic Nurse´s degree provides you eligibility to apply for Master’s degree in UAS or universities and other higher education institutions in Finland and abroad. There are also options for continuing education.

    Instructions for applying

    In the spring 2026 Joint Application 1 to higher education, you can apply to degree programmes that start in the autumn of 2026. The application period starts on the 7 January 2026 at 8 am and ends on the 21 January 2026 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

    All the information needed to apply can be found on the national Studyinfo.fi portal. At Studyinfo.fi you can find descriptions of degree programmes, application criteria, application instructions, application forms and much more.

    Application fee

    Applicants who are not citizens of the EU, EEA or Switzerland are required to pay an application fee in order to apply to higher education studies. The application fee of 100 euros is collected for applicants from countries outside EU/EEA seeking education leading to a degree in higher education. The Finnish National Agency of Education will collect the application fee in connection with filling in the Studyinfo application form. There is no application fee for Finnish or EU citizens.

    The application fee does not guarantee that you will be offered admission to studies. The application fee is not refunded if you cancel your application or are not offered admission.

Survey for New Students

At Myllypuro Campus and online (online for students who are still abroad)

  • Studies start on 24 January 2026 at 9.00.
  • The first days are orientation days. It is very important that you attend.
  • These topics will not be repeated later.

Hybrid teaching at the beginning

  • In the first part of the semester, studies are hybrid:
    • In-person at Myllypuro Campus and
    • Online for students who are still abroad. You will find the online links in Lukkarikone (Schedule Machine).
  • From week 43 (19 October 2026) onwards, most of the teaching will be held only at the Myllypuro campus.

Important to know

  • Prepare for a full-time schedule starting 24 August 2026.
  • If you have earlier Paramedic Nursing or Nursing studies, your studies may start already in week 33.
  • The autumn timetable will be published in week 30 in Lukkarikone (Schedule Machine)

  • Bring your own laptop on the first day.
  • Schedules may change before studies begin.
