Learning objectives

The student demonstrates proficiency in using office software to create reports, documents, visual presentations, perform calculations, and generate charts. The student operates with a strong awareness of information security and effectively uses Metropolia’s IT services in their studies.


Prerequisites

The course materials do not support Mac users. Please note that the office programs used in the course must be installed on the computer; the online version is not sufficient.


Teaching methods

This course introduces students to essential IT tools needed for academic and professional success. It covers the fundamentals of Microsoft Office, including Word for document creation, Excel for data management and analysis (with a focus on constructing formulas, understanding formula logic, and applying Excel’s built-in functions), and PowerPoint for creating clear and engaging visual presentations. Students will also learn to navigate the university’s digital learning environment effectively and make use of cloud-based services for collaboration and file management. By the end of the course, students will be able to produce professional-quality reports, documents, charts, and calculations, search for and interpret IT-related information, and communicate technical concepts clearly and appropriately.


Learning material and recommended literature

All learning materials and related literature will be provided by the teacher and made available via Moodle and/or OMA.


Evaluation criteria

Below 50%- Fail

Grade 1: 50-59%
Grade 2: 60-69%
Grade 3: 70-79%
Grade 4: 80-89%
Grade 5: 90-100%

Final results: 45% from exam and 55% from assignment and quizzes.
The student must obtain at least 50% in the exam in order to pass the course.

Evaluation criteria - satisfactory (1-2)
The student has achieved the course objectives fairly. The student will be able to identify, define and use the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student understands the criteria and principles of the expertise development.

Evaluation criteria - good (3-4)
The student has achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement on some areas. The student is able to define the course concepts and models and are able to justify the analysis. The student is able to apply their knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student understands the importance of expertise in the field of business and is able to analyze his/her own expertise.

Evaluation criteria - excellent (5)
The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. The student masters commendably the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student is able to make justified and fluent analysis and to present concrete development measures. The student is well prepared to apply their knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student is able to analyze the business sector expertise and the development of his/her own expertise.
