From passion to profession: 3D Game Art prepares you for a career in the industry

3D Game Art may sound like a field where you need to master complex software before you even apply. But what matters more is an interest in visual expression, storytelling and technology – combined with the motivation to create, experiment and learn. At Metropolia, you start with the fundamentals and gradually develop your skills towards a professional career.

Perhaps you have created 3D characters just for fun. Maybe you have experimented with animation, spent years drawing, designed your own game worlds or devoted hours to getting a visual detail exactly right.

But could that interest become a career? Metropolia’s new English-taught Bachelor’s Degree Programme in 3D Game Art, starting in autumn 2027 in Helsinki, Finland, offers a path towards becoming a professional in the field. The four-year degree also requires commitment and a strong motivation to continuously develop your skills.

Competition for study places can be tough, but your own creative work and experience gained through hobbies can provide a good starting point. You can apply directly after upper secondary education, and previous studies in the field are not required.

“Your own creative work and portfolio can be enough to earn you a study place. If you are a skilled creator and can demonstrate the quality of your work, you can succeed in the student selection process,” says Markus Norrena, Head of the Degree Programme.

Your artistic eye matters more than knowing a specific software

A portfolio showcasing your own visual work can be an important asset when applying. Previous experience in 3D modelling, animation or game-related projects is useful, but talented visual creators with no previous experience of specialised 3D software can also succeed in the admissions process. What matters is not which software you have used or which tools you already know.

“The artistic eye that comes through in your portfolio, and your ability to carry out projects successfully, are more important than the technologies you have used,” Norrena says.

The studies start with the fundamentals, which means students can come from different backgrounds and have different levels of technical experience. Your own creative work and visual skills are nevertheless important when applying. According to Norrena, 3D Game Art is a good fit for people who are interested in both creative expression and technology. It is also very hands-on: much of the work is done on a computer.

“To work in this field, you need to be interested in storytelling and technology. 3D work is largely hands-on work done on a computer, and projects are created in collaboration with other game industry professionals.”

From your first exercises to complete game projects

Over the four-year degree, you progress from the fundamentals to increasingly ambitious productions and towards professional-level skills. Relatively early in your studies, you will have opportunities to work on animation projects and short films. Later, you will create game projects together with Finnish and international students from other fields. On one of the game courses, students design and develop a game from the ground up and publish the finished game online.

Along the way, you learn to use 3D software and become familiar with the entire production process. Longer project courses also develop an essential professional skill: working effectively as part of a team.

“Our teaching aims to reflect the working practices of game companies and animation studios. This is important because professionals rarely create a game, animation or other 3D production alone,” Norrena explains.

Gain real-world experience before your first job

Connections with working life are built into the studies in many ways. Students meet Metropolia alumni working in the industry, visit game studios, work on client projects and receive feedback on their work from industry professionals.

During the third-year showreel course, students create a professional compilation of their work that can be used when applying for internships, for example. At the end of many project courses, industry professionals are invited to provide feedback, including people who are directly involved in recruitment.

During the fourth year, students complete an internship lasting approximately five months. Metropolia supports students in finding internship opportunities through its industry networks.

Career opportunities extend beyond the games industry

The degree may be called 3D Game Art, but the skills you develop can be applied far beyond games. Graduates of Metropolia’s Finnish-language 3D programme have built careers in areas including animation, film and television, advertising and the games industry. According to Norrena, most graduates have found employment in Finland, while others have gone on to work internationally.

3D expertise can also be applied in VFX productions, XR environments and various forms of visualisation, including applications in advertising, film and television.

Alumni of Metropolia’s Finnish-language 3D Animation and Visualisation programme have gone on to work at some of the major game companies operating in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, including Remedy, Housemarque, Supercell and Rovio.

In an international industry, working in English is part of everyday life

The new degree programme is taught mainly through on-campus studies at Metropolia’s Arabia Campus in Helsinki. The language of instruction is English, giving students the opportunity to develop their professional skills in an international learning environment.

This reflects the reality of the industry. According to Norrena, major Finnish game companies recruit talent globally, and English is commonly used as a working language.

At the same time, Metropolia wants to support international students in developing their Finnish language skills and becoming familiar with Finnish society. Students have opportunities to study Finnish and connect with Finnish-speaking students, for example through the activities of Metropolia’s active student associations.

Your own student group can also become the beginning of an international professional network.

“We want to create the kind of international environment at Metropolia that is characteristic of the games industry. At the same time, students from different fields and backgrounds learn from different cultures and ways of working,” Norrena says.

At Arabia Campus, different game industry talents come together

3D Game Art students do not study in isolation from other future game industry professionals. Metropolia is developing a Game Education Cluster where students in 3D Game Art, Game Design and game programming can meet, collaborate and combine their different areas of expertise.

The aim is not for everyone to learn to do everything. Instead, students develop strong expertise in their own field while learning how to collaborate with other professionals involved in game production.

The wider environment at Arabia Campus supports this approach. The campus is home to dozens of creative degree programmes as well as the Helsinki XR Center. By 2028, Metropolia aims to offer three international and some Finnish-language game-related degree programmes.

Bringing visual artists, designers and technical specialists into the same environment gives students experience of what real game production can be like before they enter the industry.

This hands-on approach is at the heart of 3D Game Art at Metropolia: you do not learn 3D simply by studying the theory. You learn by experimenting, creating and doing.
