A new specimen collection service is opening in Myllypuro, where Metropolia’s students will have the opportunity to practise customer service, specimen collection and interprofessional collaboration in an authentic working environment. Customers in need of laboratory services, in turn, will have access to easily reachable services.

The specimen collection service will be staffed by Metropolia’s biomedical laboratory science students under the supervision of an instructor. Through this collaboration, Metropolia is able to offer an authentic learning environment for specimen collection on its own campus. Vita Laboratoriot Ltd will be responsible for the laboratory analytics.

According to Mari Virtanen, Degree Programme Coordinator in Biomedical Laboratory Science at Metropolia, the HyMy Village specimen collection services are intended for everyone interested in their own health.

“You can choose the tests that best suit your needs from the selection of laboratory examinations. You can come for specimen collection without a referral, or with one, of course. Appointments can be booked easily online or by calling HyMy Village customer service,” Virtanen explains.

The specimen collection services will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 18 August to 10 December 2026. Specimen collection opens on 18 August 2026, and the official opening of the service will be celebrated on 14 September 2026 at Metropolia’s Myllypuro Campus as part of the “Hymyä Myllyyn” event.

Low-Threshold Services in Partnership with an Experienced Laboratory Provider

At HyMy Village on Metropolia’s Myllypuro Campus, students provide health and wellbeing services as part of their studies and gain experience working with clients in real service situations.

HyMy Village (Hyvinvointia Myllypurosta – “Wellbeing from Myllypuro”) is a learning, development and service environment for wellbeing and health. Its services include, for example, physiotherapy, an optician’s shop, nurse appointments, podiatry, and oral health care services.

This authentic service environment enables the creation of new operating models and services for the social and health care sector of the future. According to Mari Virtanen, the laboratory services complement the overall service offering of HyMy Village and strengthen its role as a platform for the development of wellbeing and health services.

“In biomedical laboratory science, specimen collection, analytics and customer interaction are key areas of competence. Students now have a unique opportunity to learn clinical work in an authentic customer service environment. Collaboration with Vita Laboratoriot ensures a high-quality laboratory process from specimen collection to analysis and, ultimately, to delivering the results to the client,” Virtanen says.

According to Virtanen, the aim is to provide low-threshold services in an easily accessible location. Collaboration with an experienced laboratory provider guarantees high service quality.

“We are pleased to be involved in implementing a new kind of service that combines two important objectives: the professional development of future biomedical laboratory scientists and the availability of low-threshold laboratory services in Eastern Helsinki. Vita Laboratoriot brings to the collaboration the strong expertise and reliability of results of a domestic accredited central laboratory,” says Sakari Jokiranta, Chief Medical Officer at Vita Laboratoriot.
