Health Requirements

Those applying to study within Health Care and Social Services must have sufficient health and functional capacity to be capable of completing practical assignments and work placement periods as part of the studies.

Those applying to the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science must have adequate vision to work on a microscope and normal colour vision. Those admitted to the programme are required to submit a certificate provided by an ophthalmologist, optician or optometrist at the beginning of their studies as instructed by the university of applied sciences. The university of applied sciences may cancel admission if an applicant fails to submit such a certificate by the specified deadline, or if an applicant cannot be considered fit to study on the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science based on the certificate provided.

Those applying to the field should bear in mind that:

• studying and working in a profession require good mental balance;
• the field is not suitable for illegal drug users or for alcohol or legal drug abusers;
• conditions such as musculoskeletal diseases, chronic skin diseases and allergies may lead to health issues during studies or later on in working life.

Universities of applied sciences may request students to produce an extract on criminal background before they go on a supervised period of work placement as part of studies, if working with minors forms an essential part of the work placement.

Universities of applied sciences are entitled to refer a student for a drug test, if there is reasonable suspicion of drug use.

Applicants are required to produce information concerning their health status as required to assess admission at the request of the university of applied sciences concerned, as well as information on any possible decision on cancellation of their right to study.

Admission is conditional until the university of applied sciences has checked school certificates for those admitted, as well as certificates confirming adequate vision for those admitted to the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science, and received any evidence of health status that it may have requested.

Vision Requirement for Biomedical Laboratory Science Studies

Students admitted to the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science are required to have sufficient vision and normal colour vision. More detailed requirement are descripted at uasinfo.fi website in the healt section "field-spesific requirements".

Those selected for the degree programme must obtain a certificate from an optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist, which must be submitted no later than 14 days after accepting the study place as instructed separately. If your vision has already been tested before for the purpose of applying for biomedical laboratory science, the statement is valid for three years from the date it was issued.

Student selection is conditional until the university of applied sciences has processed and assessed the information regarding the vision of the person who has accepted the study place.

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences may cancel the student selection if:
- certificates regarding vision are not submitted within the deadline announced by the university of applied sciences and/or
- it is obvious that the student's vision does not meet the requirements for admission as a student described on the uasinfo.fi website.

A university of applied sciences may cancel admission for the following reasons:

• An applicant fails to submit certificates by the deadline specified by the university of applied sciences.
• An applicant has provided false information about his or her grades.
• An applicant admitted to the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science cannot be considered fit for the programme on the basis of a certificate of visual acuity.
• An applicant cannot be considered fit to study on a Health Care and Social Services programme due to his or her health status.
