Industrial Management combines technical and business know-how
Industrial Management engineers are business-oriented engineers. They work in different roles in procurement, production, logistics, sales, customer support, service provision and management. The job opportunities are good. A customer-oriented approach alongside technical expertise is a competitive advantage in the labor market.
Competence to develop operations
Industrial Management studies combine technology and business expertise. You will learn to understand, model, analyze and develop the business functions and operations that are required to produce goods and services, including sales, procurement, logistics and supply chain management as well as the processes and information systems that support these functions.
With this kind of expertise, you will be equipped with skills and tools aimed at improving productivity and efficiency or developing new businesses.
You will learn, for example:
- how operational processes are managed and developed
- how to manage business-to-business sales and identify market opportunities
- how companies handle and transport their products
- how companies are managed and how to make informed decisions
- how to assess profitability and develop performance
- how information systems bring business benefits
- how to make the best use of digital information
- how to combine traditional engineering expertise with the opportunities of digitalization
We offer high-quality education
This Bachelor’s program takes four years to complete. During these four years we offer you
- a well-balanced combination of core and more advanced professional courses in Industrial Management
- an international and supportive learning environment
- the opportunity to find friends and future colleagues from around the world
- a multidisciplinary educational institution with a vast partner network
- the opportunity to complete part of your studies as an internship abroad with study options available around the world at our partner universities
Full-time studies
The studies are very intensive from day one and require an average of 40 hours of hard work per week. About half of the studies are guided by our teachers, the rest is independent work and teamwork.
The courses include theoretical instruction, various practical assignments, independent and group studies as well as written assignments. Most courses include a written exam.
Courses require attendance in on-campus teaching, and the teaching hours are between Mon-Fri 8.00-17.00. The timing of lessons may vary from week to week. In exceptional cases, there may be teaching in the evenings from 5 pm to 8.30 pm.
Since classes take place on campus, it means the studies cannot be completed alongside a day job, or as distance learning, online studies or totally independently. Please note that it may be very hard to study full-time if you are working simultaneously.
The Industrial Management Bachelor’s degree consists of 240 ECTS credit units. The number of credit units for each course is based on the amount of work it requires. An average academic year consists of 1,600 hours of work, which is equivalent to 60 credit units (1 credit unit = 27 hours).
The studies are carried out at Metropolia's Karamalmi campus at Karaportti 2, 02610 Espoo. The language of instruction is English. The required level of English communication skills is B2 (SEFR) or IELTS level 6.
Success in Industrial Management studies requires taking responsibility for your own actions and learning, as well as active participation in teaching sessions and the readiness to study in your free time. You are responsible for ensuring that you have the required study skills, which include, for example, the use of spread sheet and text editor tools, information retrieval skills, teamwork skills and the ability to write various factual texts in English.
Bring your own laptop
We expect you to bring your own laptop. See the IT equipment recommendation here.
Not all programs used in industrial management studies are available on Mac computers. For this reason, a PC is recommended for students. If the student has a Mac, then in some courses (about 7-10 courses), the assignments of the courses must be done using the Windows computers of Metropolia's computer labs.
For occasional distance learning, it is recommended to use/acquire a headset.

Confirming a place of study requires certain formalities to be completed by the deadline. More detailed instructions below:
Non-EU/EEA students need a student residence permit. You can begin the student residence permit application online at Enterfinland.fi. Remember that you must personally visit a Finnish embassy or consulate as part of this process. Start your residence permit process as soon as possible, carefully following the immigration authorities' instructions and regulations, so that you can receive your permit in good time before your studies begin! You can find detailed information and advice on the residence permit requirements and procedures on the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) website.
Note that participating online programmes does not entitle you receiving residence permit. See more about the topic in Finnish Immigration Service websites.
All Metropolia's students who do not have a Finnish personal identity code, have to apply for it before their arrival or register at the local registry office after their arrival to Finland to apply for one.
Students who have to apply for residence permit (i.e. non-EU/non-EEA citizens) before their arrival to Finland should ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System when they apply for their first residence permit. This way they will receive a Finnish personal identity code at the same time as they are issued with the permit. More information on this for residence permit applicants in Migri site
Other students have to apply for the personal identity code from the local registry office of the city where you are living in.
More information on Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV).
More information on registration to the Finnish Population Information System in DVV site
After you have received the personal identification code, remember to inform it to the Student Services with the official document. Acceptable documents are for example DVV:s document (Notification of registration), Finnish passport, Finnish identity card with a photo, issued by police, Finnish driver's license, residence permit or KELA card with a photo.
User account activation is possible from the start date of your study right. Activate your user account before the orientation days by following the instructions available on the IT Services website. To activate your account, you will need personal online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. Also check the instructions provided by your degree programme.
If you do not have Finnish online banking credentials or a mobile certificate, authenticate using the Candour ID application. After authentication, you will receive instructions on how to activate your user account. Read the instructions for authentication and receiving user accounts on the Information Management Services website.
Once you have activated your user account, enable multi-factor authentication for Microsoft 365 services. First enable SMS authentication, and then Microsoft Authenticator. If possible, also enable alternative authentication methods on your other mobile devices. This will help you avoid login issues if your primary phone is replaced or lost. Follow the instructions available on the IT Services website.
If you have any questions about user account activation or multi-factor authentication, please contact the Helpdesk. You will find the contact information on the IT Services website.
All foreign students (who are not EU citizens or citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland) who come to Finland for the purposes of studying are required to have a health insurance, if the studies endure longer than three months.
