Shaping Urban Communities by Smart and Sustainable Solutions was the topic of the third annual conference of U!REKA - the Urban Research and Education Knowledge Alliance - held in Frankfurt 26-28 November.
The consortium is formed by six European universities, and its purpose is to use its shared focus on urban topics, and pool the expertise of the member universities, in order to produce high quality practice-oriented research.
The themes of the conference included smart cities, health and well-being in urban areas, urban sustainable development, migration and displacement, higher education research and innovation, and the urban eco-system.
The member universities of the consortium are:
- Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands
- Edinburgh Napier University, Great Britain
- Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Germany
- Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland
- Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway
- University College Ghent, Belgium
“The U!REKA partners share many common strategic goals. Our profiles are very similar, as well as the challenges and possibilities the institutions have identified in their urban areas. The conference and the meetings were inspiring, and by getting people together, again succeeded in furthering the cooperation possibilities”, says Riitta Konkola, President and CEO of Metropolia UAS.
Creating Cooperation and Solutions
About 100 researchers and administrative staff met in the conference to present, discuss and develop research projects and collaborations.
The member universities’ students are entitled to an education that prepares them for a rapidly changing work environment. Learning from and with each other, the U!REKA institutions strive for excellence in these fields.
Prof. Dr. Frank E.P. Dievernich, President of Frankfurt UAS and current Chair of U!REKA’s Steering Committee, summed up: “Smart and sustainable solutions - this year’s conference motto is exemplary of what the U!REKA members stand for as universities."
"We want to make an impact, to be involved, to be useful to our communities. We want to be responsive to the challenges our societies and especially our urban communities face."
"The presentations’ range and depth really illustrate the U!REKA universities’ research potential.”
