Automotive and mechanical engineering expertise from Metropolia

From electric mobility solutions to the clean transition of industry, the school of Automotive and Mechanical Engineering offers high-quality education and services in automotive and mechanical engineering. We specialise in higher education and partnerships in research, development, innovation.

Our staff of highly respected specialists offer and develop new training and service solutions to the evolving industries and educational needs of youth and companies. With our continuous learning courses, organisations and professionals can update their skills and keep up with the rapid development of the industry.

Skills development for professionals and companies

We train over 160 new bachelor's/master's students for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area labor market each year.

You can study in three bachelor of engineering degrees in automotive engineering and three bachelor of engineering degrees in mechanical engineering. We also offer one master's-level degree in automotive engineering. Two of our degrees are fully taught in English; since the automotive and mechanical engineering fields are international, specialists are needed globally. Metropolia is the only university of applied science in Finland to offer the opportunity to specialise in automotive electrical engineering and electronics in our automotive engineering degree studies.

Studies are multidisciplinary, and the curriculum is developed and carried out in close cooperation with companies. Students get to apply their knowledge in practice in projects, during internships, and in their thesis. Courses on languages, communication and working life skills, as well as mathematical and natural science competences, are included in the degree to ensure that graduates have a strong foundation on which to build their future learning.

Coming soon

We are renewing our degree portfolio to meet the changing needs of the industries. In autumn 2026, we will launch a new degree in Robotics Engineering. This Bachelor's degree will be conducted in English as blended studies, and it will be suitable for international applicants. Robotics degree is an example of educational collaboration with Metropolia's School of Smart Solutions.

Update your skills with us

Have you seen a new, interesting technology emerge and want to know more? Is the company you are representing making changes that require staff training? Update your skills and knowledge with us!

We offer continuous learning opportunities with our flexible training packages. Currently, most of the courses offered are conducted in Finnish, but our teaching staff will gladly offer the implementations in English as well.

Our continuing education services include both courses for individual learners and tailored training for companies. See our current offering and contact us for tailored content or more information on the courses.

Research, Development and Innovation (RDI)

We actively participate in research, development and innovation activities. Our core areas include:

  • Urban air quality and vehicle emissions
  • Electric vehicles
  • Concept cars
  • Mobility services and vehicle robotics
  • Prototyping
  • Material technology
  • Intelligent control systems
  • Project life cycle management

We develop and manufacture prototypes, demonstrators and concepts. Our facilities enable performing various types of tests and analyses. Assignments may range from one-day tests to extensive, multidisciplinary development projects, for which we can offer in-depth professional knowledge and project management expertise. Where possible, the projects also provide an excellent platform for final-year students to develop their skills through internships and theses.

Services for Companies

Smart Mobility Garage (SMG) with product development services, design, and testing. In SMG, the services include electrical design (especially vehicles and automation), strength calculations and flow calculations (especially vehicle aerodynamics), multi-body simulations (MBS) and the manufacture and assembly of individual products or small series upon request.

Automotive Testing Chamber, where vehicles, batteries or components can be tested in the temperature range -46 °C to +60 °C. The environmental laboratory's 4WD dynamometer enables precise vehicle load testing (e.g. WLTC, NEDC) up to 460 kW.

Welding services, (in Finnish) including design and implementation of engine stands, welding tests of new materials, design and implementation of device prototypes and welding and sheet metal work training without qualification, e.g. for hobby groups.

Material and coating technology analyses and testing services (in Finnish), including corrosion resistance, coating properties and environmental stress.

Measurements with a general material testing device (in Finnish) in accordance with ISO standards, including tensile/compressive strength, elastic modulus, torsional stiffness, spring behavior under load and fatigue testing.

Additionally, Metropolia offers a wide range of other services for organisations. You can find them on the Services for Businesses and Organisations page and the Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) page.
