Studies

The Construction Information Technology programme focuses on the information technology solutions specific to the built environment, such as building information modeling, digital twins, computational design, common data environments, and data gathering from existing buildings through scanning and sensor technologies.

In the programme the IT topics are integrated into the study of structural design and other aspects of construction. In addition to providing structural design skills, the programme prepares the students to tackle the future needs and challenges within the construction industry due to the digital and green transitions as well as changing building and land use regulations.

This study programme is targeted for students who want to become civil engineers but with strong digital and IT skills. If your interests are purely in information technology, please see our other Bachelor´s programme Information Technology.

Content of studies

The programme consists of courses in basic science and professional civil engineering subjects. In addition, there will be a heavy emphasis on information technology and various digital solutions that apply to construction and the built environment. Studies are completed in collaboration with the construction and real estate industry via work placements, innovation projects and Bachelor´s thesis research. This will ensure that the thesis topics will be fresh and useful both for the students as well as the companies that commission them.

  • Core studies 40 ECTS
  • Professional Studies 115 ECTS
    • Civil Engineering 70 ECTS
    • Computing Basics 15 ECTS
    • Digital construction 30 ECTS
  • Elective/Optional studies 30 ECTS
  • Innovation project 10 ECTS
  • Work placement 30 ECTS

Future career opportunities

Besides in structural design, a graduate of the programme can be employed for example in the fields of:

  • BIM modelling
  • quality control and coordination
  • algorithmic design
  • analysis (using tools such as LCA/LCC, energy simulation, cost and quantities take-off)
  • data management of projects
  • management of common platforms
  • implementation and training of software programs
  • data analytics
  • creation of AI solutions
  • building and maintaining digital twins

After completing the study programme in Construction Information Technology, the graduates can continue post-graduate studies in the same field in a Master's degree programme Computing in Construction or specialise in international project management via a Master´s degree programme Construction and Real Estate Management (ConREM) at Metropolia UAS.

The tools needed

At a university of applied sciences, the student is responsible for all costs and expenses related to his studies, for example materials acquired during his studies. At the start of the studies, the student will need:

  • RFID Card
    • Students need a key card to move around Myllypuro campus. Bring your own card that has an RFID ability with you. You can register the card as your key card with registration machines that are situated in the lobby of C-building. Ask Reception Services or tutor students for help if needed.
  • Laptop
    • Strong recommendation for a PC machine, because the planning and dimensioning programs in the construction industry mainly work in the Windows environment.
    • Windows 11 / 10 (64-bit)
    • RAM 16+ GB
    • Hard disk SSD, 1TB
    • Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 3 GHz or better
    • Nvidia separate 3d graphics card, e.g. RTX 3060/3070
    • As big screen as possible or another separate screen at home
    • Roller mouse, because the roller is used (and almost mandatory) in many applications
    • If you have already acquired a laptop with different features, you will probably get by with it during your studies. However, you should be prepared for the fact that a laptop equipped with more modest resources may work more slowly.
    • The use of different programs on the students' own laptops depends on the licenses of different software suppliers. The availability of student licenses for the software may vary from year to year.
  • Headset microphone
  • Web camera
  • Calculator
    • CASIO fx-991EX or Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CX II-T CAS
