Mechanical Engineering studies

Metropolia University of Applied Sciences offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering taught in English in Finland.

In this programme, you learn how machines, products and technical systems are designed and improved. You gain skills that are needed in modern industry.

Your studies combine theory with hands-on learning. You work on practical projects and learn together with other students. The programme gives you a strong base for engineering work and further studies.

Why choose Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical Engineering is a broad and practical field of engineering. Mechanical engineers help design and improve machines, products and technical systems used in everyday life and industry.

During your studies, you learn how engineering solutions are developed and applied in practice. You build problem-solving skills, learn to work in teams, and develop a structured engineering mindset.

The programme focuses on:

  • practical engineering skills
  • problem-solving
  • sustainable and efficient solutions
  • teamwork and communication

These skills are essential in a wide range of engineering roles and industries.

What will you study?

The studies combine mathematical and scientific foundations with a practical, hands-on approach. You learn by doing and apply theory to real engineering problems throughout your studies.

At the beginning of the programme, you focus on building essential scientific and technical skills. In the third year, you choose a specialisation and apply for a major. After being admitted, you deepen your expertise in your chosen field.

Your studies consist of:

  • Common studies in Technology – 60 ECTS
  • Common Metropolia UAS studies – 10 ECTS
  • Professional studies – 60 ECTS
  • Specialisation studies (majors in Machine Design or Aircraft Engineering) – 45 ECTS
  • Project studies – 10 ECTS
  • Elective studies – 10 ECTS
  • Work Placement – 30 ECTS
  • Thesis – 15 ECTS

As part of the degree programme, you study Finnish to support professional networking and everyday life in Finland.

International opportunities are an integral part of the programme. Students can apply for short- or long-term student exchange at partner universities, and the work placement can be completed partly or fully abroad.

Major options

The programme offers two majors:

  • Machine Design
  • Aircraft Engineering

Machine design

In the Machine Design major, you learn to design innovative, user-friendly, and easy-to-manufacture products with sustainability in mind. Machine design engineers often work in product development and take both technical requirements and customer needs into account.

The studies focus on product development, materials and manufacturing engineering, engineering mechanics, computer-aided design (CAD), and simulation. You gain a solid foundation in engineering design and analysis, preparing you for a wide range of roles in different industries.

Machine design engineering involves problem-solving that requires creativity, initiative, teamwork, and in-depth technical knowledge.

Aircraft Engineering

The Aircraft Engineering major is suitable for students interested in avionics, aircraft systems, or drones, and who want to understand how they work in practice.

Studies include aeronautical engineering, aeromechanics, structural solutions, avionics, aircraft engines and systems, and drones. You develop complex problem-solving skills and learn how to improve aircraft safety, environmental performance, and efficiency.

Aviation is a global industry, and skilled aircraft engineers are needed worldwide. Graduates may find employment with airlines, aircraft manufacturers, authorities, research organisations, the defence industry, or in drone development. Aircraft engineering is taught in cooperation with other educational organisations.

Please note

  • Students must apply for their preferred major option.
  • Major selection is carried out once a year in the spring term.
  • Major studies start once a year, in August.
  • To begin major studies, students must have completed 120 credits (two years of studies) according to the curriculum.
  • Students are not guaranteed a study place in their preferred major.
  • There are limited study places in each major.
  • If there are more applicants than available places, selection is based on study success and programme-specific criteria.
  • The major option gives you in-depth insight into subject areas that are relevant and up to date. You can also extend your knowledge in any other major options by taking it as a minor in your engineering studies.
  • Major options and courses may be subject to change.

What are the career prospects for Mechanical Engineers?

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering prepares you for a wide range of career opportunities in industry. During your studies, you develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to work in mechanical engineering and aviation-related fields.

Your choice of major helps you shape your career path. Work placements, project studies, and your thesis offer valuable opportunities to gain practical experience and start building professional networks already during your studies.

Many graduates continue their studies at Master’s level in universities in Finland or abroad, while others move directly into professional engineering roles in industry.
