Interested in the diverse opportunities of automation and robotics?

Automation technology is everywhere – in industry, buildings, and our everyday lives. It enables efficient, safe, and sustainable production processes.

As a student of Automation Engineering at Metropolia, you will learn how intelligent systems, robotics, and artificial intelligence work together to create the smart solutions of tomorrow. The degree gives you practical skills and wide-ranging expertise for various positions in design, development, maintenance, and management across multiple industries.

Study Objectives

Develop your skills in the core areas of automation and digitalisation!
The studies emphasise a hands-on approach, problem-solving, and learning by doing. At Myyrmäki Campus, you will work in modern laboratories and project environments where theory meets practice.

Graduates in automation engineering are highly sought-after professionals. Your expertise will be needed in industry, production, process automation, and energy systems — wherever intelligent and efficient solutions are required.

Study Contents and Implementation

The degree programme in Automation Engineering is carried out mainly as full-time studies on Myyrmäki Campus. The studies combine lectures, laboratory work, projects, guided self-study, and online learning.

During the first year, all students complete common core studies. After that, you will choose your major:

  • Automation Engineering
  • Electronics

Major Options

Automation Engineering

Automation Engineering is a field of intelligent technologies combining robotics, artificial intelligence, and control systems to build a more efficient future for industry and society.

You will gain expertise in measurement and control technology, process automation, fieldbus systems, data communication, and programming. You will also explore cutting-edge applications such as robotics, digital twins, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT).

Practical studies take place in the campus laboratories, including Robo and AIoT Garages, which offer excellent opportunities for hands-on learning and innovation.

Electronics

The Electronics major is taught in English and focuses on embedded systems, sensors, power electronics, and wireless technologies. The studies are conducted in cooperation with the Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics degree programme.

This major offers an excellent opportunity for internationalisation at home and provides strong qualifications for working in electronics and health technology – for example, in product development, design, or testing roles.

Career Opportunities

As an automation engineer, you can work in a wide range of positions across various sectors. The employment situation in the field is excellent, and graduates find work in:

  • system and process design
  • research and development
  • maintenance and commissioning
  • sales and project management

Potential employers include production plants, engineering offices, software companies, importers, and research institutions.
The field offers exciting opportunities to work with emerging technologies and to develop smart and energy-efficient solutions that shape the future of industry and society.

Further Study Opportunities

After graduation, you can continue your studies in Master’s degree programmes at universities (Master of Science in Technology) or pursue a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree at a university of applied sciences after gaining at least two years of relevant work experience.

Automation Engineering provides a strong foundation for lifelong learning and professional development in the evolving world of technology.

Internationalisation Opportunities

As a Metropolia student, you can complete part of your studies or your internship abroad.
The international study environment and English-language teaching provide excellent opportunities to improve your language skills and cross-cultural competence.

In the Electronics major, studies continue after the first six months in an English-language programme, giving you the chance to build global networks and gain valuable international experience.
