Interested in the diverse opportunities of electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering is all around us – in homes, industries, and energy systems that power our modern society. As an electrical engineer, you play a key role in designing and developing smart, sustainable, and reliable electrical solutions for the future.

At Metropolia, you will study how electrical networks, power systems, and automation technologies shape our energy infrastructure. The programme provides a strong foundation in both theory and practice, preparing you for specialist, design, and management roles in a wide range of industries.

Study Objectives

Develop into a professional who understands the energy systems of tomorrow!
The studies emphasise hands-on learning, problem-solving, and collaboration. You will study in modern laboratories at Myyrmäki Campus, where theory and practice meet through project work and real-world applications.

Graduates in electrical engineering are highly valued professionals. Their expertise is needed in energy companies, industrial organisations, and construction projects that build the smart grids and sustainable energy systems of the future.

Study Contents and Implementation

The degree programme is carried out mainly as full-time studies at Myyrmäki Campus. The studies combine lectures, laboratory work, projects, guided self-study, and online learning.

During your first year, you will complete common core studies that build a solid foundation in engineering. In the following years, you will choose your major and deepen your expertise in your selected field.

Major Options

Power Network Engineering

This major focuses on the transmission and distribution of electrical energy between producers and consumers. You will study future smart grids and sustainable energy solutions, as well as topics related to electrical drives, renewable energy, and electric vehicles.
The continuous development of electrical networks, digitalisation, and the energy transition create a growing demand for skilled professionals in this area.

Power Engineering and Electrical Drives

In this major, you will explore how electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy. You will study power electronics, electric motors, and frequency converter technology used in renewable energy production and modern automation systems.
Finland’s expertise in electrical drives is internationally recognised, and graduates in this field are in high demand.

Building Electrical Engineering

Building electrical engineering focuses on the design and implementation of intelligent building systems. You will study lighting, energy efficiency, automation, and modern control and monitoring systems.
These skills prepare you for positions in design, contracting, maintenance, and development of electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

Career Opportunities

A degree in Electrical Engineering opens the door to a wide variety of career paths. Employment prospects are excellent, and graduates work as specialists, designers, and managers in:

  • energy and power network companies
  • industrial and manufacturing enterprises
  • contracting and engineering offices
  • research and development organisations

Electrical engineers design, develop, and maintain the smart and energy-efficient systems that keep modern society running. The field offers opportunities to work with cutting-edge technology both in Finland and internationally.

Further Study Opportunities

After graduation, you can continue to Master’s degree programmes at universities (Master of Science in Technology) or pursue a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree at a university of applied sciences after gaining at least two years of relevant work experience.

Electrical Engineering provides an excellent foundation for lifelong learning and professional development in the evolving energy sector.

Internationalisation Opportunities

All students can take part in international exchange programmes or complete internships abroad.
The international study environment at Metropolia, along with strong industry connections, offers a great opportunity to build global competence and networks.
