What are path studies?

Path studies are an alternative route to a degree student. You study first year studies with a degree group at the Open UAS. In some degrees, it is also possible that path students have their own group.

With the studies completed in the open UAS path, you can apply for a Metropolia degree student in the separate application “Application on the Basis of Metropolia’s Open UAS Studies”. If you have been admitted a study right as a degree student, your path studies will be accepted as part of your degree studies and you will continue your studies smoothly with the group. Please note, however, that completing path studies does not automatically guarantee admission as a degree student in a separate application.

The scope, content and implementation of the pathway studies varies depending on the degree programme. In bachelor's degrees, the scope of path studies is generally 30-60 credits and in master’s degrees 15-30 credits.

Who are path studies suitable for?

Path studies are right for you if

  • your goal is a study right in a degree programme
  • you want to take advantage of the intermediate year by studying purposefully
  • you are ready for full-time studies
  • you want to try to study at a University of Applied Sciences or in a certain field without losing your first-time quota in a joint application
  • your work experience doesn't yet meet the requirements for Master's degree studies, but you want to start studying master level courses while you work towards fulfilling the requirements

There are no basic training requirements for bachelor's paths. Master’s paths require a suitable bachelor's degree in the field or a corresponding university degree in the field as a basic education requirement. However, it is good to note that you need general study skills and sufficient language skills in your studies.

Selection for path studies

Students are selected either in the order of enrollment or based on a pre-test.

If you stay in a wait list on a path, you can still get a place 7 days before the start of the path if someone who gets a place cancels their registration.

The Open UAS path studies are primarily intended for persons who have not previously studied in path studies at Metropolia. If necessary, students for path studies can be selected deviating from the order of enrollment on this basis.

Pre-tests and time table for path studies

Some of the paths include a pre-test, in which those applying for path studies may be given priority in accordance with the selection criteria that have been decided. For further details regarding the pre-test, please see the additional information provided in the course section of the enrollment system.

Part of the degree programs invite only some of the enrolled students to the pre-test, some invite all.

  • Pre-test to path studies starting in Spring 2026 will be organized during 1st of December to 2nd of December, 2025. Invites to pre-test will be send by email during 27th of November to 28th of November, 2025.

Information about the selection or rejection will be sent by e-mail on 4th of December, 2025 the latest.

Accepting the study place in paths that include a pre-test

Applicants who get a study place based on an accepted pre-test will receive an email, which includes a link to accept the study place. Please remember to follow your email carefully during the process, also check your email's spam folder. Kindly note that if you don't accept the study place in 24 hours, it will be offered forward and you will lose your study place.

If you are on the waiting list, you can receive a study place to the path if a person who has passed the test does not accept a study place or cancels it after accepting.
