Open UAS - Terms of Payment and Cancellation

Metropolia University of applied sciences Ltd's payment and cancellation terms for open UAS from 1.8.2025

1. Registration and right to study at the open university of applied sciences

By registering for the Open University of Applied Sciences ("Open UAS") studies at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences Ltd. ("Metropolia"), you indicate that you have read and you accept these terms.

Registration for studies is binding. Persons who meet the prerequisites and language proficiency requirements for the studies can register for Open UAS studies. Registration must be done through the electronic registration system. Registrations made by other means will not be accepted. Metropolia's degree students with status ‘present’ cannot register or study at the Open UAS. Before registering, the registrant is obliged to check the schedule and implementation method of the studies and that they meet all the prerequisites and language proficiency requirements. The right to study granted based on registration is limited in time and content. The right to study cannot be transferred to other studies or to the next semester or year. There is no right to absence at the Open UAS.

Amendment to the terms as of 14.10.2025: For study modules and path studies, an extension of the right to study may be possible for one additional semester following the original study right period, subject to the decision and discretion of the degree head. The extension can be granted only once. The prerequisite for the extension is that the unfinished studies in the module or path can be completed within the additional period, and that there is available capacity in the studies. The amendment to the terms concerning path studies will be applied from 1 August 2025 onwards. The amendment to the terms concerning study modules will be applied from 1 January 2026 onwards.

Path studies is a study module that is 15–120 credits in scope, after which the student can apply to become a degree student at Metropolia. However, completing the path studies does not guarantee a study place, but you will be admitted to the studies according to the application criteria.

At Metropolia, the autumn semester is during 1.8.-31.12. and the spring semester during 1.1.-31.7.

2. Cancellation of open UAS studies

Registration for studies is binding. Metropolia will charge the fee in full even if the registration is cancelled, the studies are not commenced or the student later discontinues their studies, unless otherwise provided in section 3.

A cancellation notice must always be submitted for the cancellation of registration, non-commencement or discontinuation of studies in accordance with section 4, so that no information on incomplete or active studies remains visible in the records of My Studyinfo and so that possible refunds of the fees can be checked.

3. Exceptions to charging fees

At Metropolia's discretion, the charging of Open UAS fees may be waived in whole or in part in the cases mentioned below, provided that the student submits a cancellation notice regarding cancellation or discontinuation of studies in accordance with section 4 below within the time specified in each section below or, if no time has been specified, within a reasonable time considering the circumstances after the reason has become apparent.

3.1 Cancellation of path studies

Scheduled path studies: If the student cancels their registration for a path lasting at least two semesters before the start of the path studies or cancels or discontinues the studies during the first semester of their studies at the latest, Metropolia will charge the student 50% of the total fees.

Flexible path studies: If the student cancels or discontinues the studies of the NonStop path, the working life professional path or the athlete's path within 6 months of receiving the right to study, and if the student has completed no more than half of the credits of the path studies at the time of submitting the cancellation notice, Metropolia will charge the student 50% of the total fees.

3.2 Serious illness prevents the commencement or continuation of studies

An official medical certificate or other reliable report must be submitted on the illness and its impact on the ability to study. Waiving the charging of fees does not apply to studies that have already been completed.

3.3 Caring for a child due to illness or other weighty reason prevents the commencement or continuation of studies

3.4 Students of an Open UAS study module or path studies receive a degree study place at Metropolia

The Open UAS fees are not charged at all if the student receives a degree study place at Metropolia and cancels the registration for Open UAS studies before the start of the Open UAS studies or in flexible path studies and NonStop study modules before any studies have been completed.

3.5 Metropolia cancels the teaching

If Metropolia cancels the teaching, no fees will be charged and the fees already paid will be refunded. As a rule, teaching is cancelled only on the basis of a compelling reason.

4. Instruction for submitting a cancellation notice

The cancellation notice is made to Metropolia by taking the following measures: The cancellation notice must be made using the link sent in the registration confirmation by email. In addition, a notice regarding making the cancellation notice shall be sent to the Open UAS customer service. . The reason for the cancellation notice must be stated in the email if the cancellation notice is based on sections 3.2, 3.3 or 3.4. Note: However, no detailed health information or health-related documents should be written or attached into the e-mail.

If the cancellation notice is based on sections 3.2 or 3.3, a document verifying the reason must be submitted using this e-form. In addition, the delivery of the document must be notified to the Open UAS customer service.

Cancellations made in any other way will not be taken into account.

5. Other terms

Metropolia reserves the right to make changes to the information provided in the curriculum. Those who have registered for the studies will be notified of any changes without delay. The copyrights of the course materials offered by Metropolia to students belong to Metropolia or the teacher. The materials are for the student's personal use only and may not be presented, copied or passed on.

6. Open UAS fees and payment methods

The Open UAS fees are based on the Universities of Applied Sciences Act (‘ammattikorkeakoululaki’ 932/2014) and the Government Decree on the Fees Charged for the Activities of Universities of Applied Sciences (‘valtioneuvoston asetus ammattikorkeakoulujen toiminnasta perittävistä maksuista’ 1440/2014, amending Decree 200/2024), based on which studies can cost a maximum of €45 per credit. At Metropolia, Open UAS studies cost €0–45 per credit. You can see the exact price of the studies in the study information in the registration system. In addition to the actual study fees, completing the studies may incur other reasonable costs (e.g. learning materials). Payment is made either at the time of registration as a one-time payment with online payment* or by invoice. Note: For some studies, payment may only be possible via online payment at the time of registration. When paid by invoice, studies lasting one semester will be charged in one instalment and studies lasting at least two semesters in two instalments. The first invoice will be sent by post to a Finnish home address at the beginning of the studies and the second invoice will be sent 4 months after the start of the studies. Invoices abroad are sent by email.

If you do not pay the invoice by the due date, we will send you a payment reminder for it, for which the collection costs in accordance with the Debt Collection Act (‘perintälaki’ 513/1999) will be charged. The Open UAS fees, including interest and costs, are directly enforceable as receivables under public law without a judgment or decision.

*Payment service provider when paying with online payment

Paytrail Oyj serves as the payment intermediary and service provider in collaboration with Finnish banks and credit institutions and is an authorized payment Institution. Paytrail Oyj will be shown as the recipient on your bank or credit card statement and forward the payment to the merchant. For complaints, please contact the website the payment was made to.

PAYMENT AND CANCELLATION TERMS FOR OPEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES regarding studies that start before 1.8.2025 (including a change on 14.10.2025 to section *)

When you enrol for open UAS studies, the enrolment is always considered binding. Upon enrolment, you commit to these Terms of Payment and Cancellation.

You are granted the right to study for a limited time and limited content. The right to study cannot be transferred to another study module or course or postponed until the next academic year.

Fees

The Open UAS fees are based on the amounts specified in the Government Decree on Fees Charged by the Universities of Applied Sciences (1440/2014, section 1) which states that Open UAS fees can be 45€ per credit point. At Metropolia, Open UAS studies cost between 0-45€ per credit point. You can view the exact cost of studies in the course details when enrolling.

Payment can be made either at the time of registration or by invoice. Note: For some studies, payment may only be possible via online payment at the time of registration. Invoices are sent via mail in Finland and via e-mail to abroad.

If you do not pay the invoice by the due date, we will send you a payment reminder for which we will charge collection fees in accordance with the Act on Debt Collection (513/1999). The fees of the Open UAS, including any interest and expenses, are based on public law, which means their collection may be enforced without a court ruling or decision.

Courses

You can pay for individual courses when you enroll or they can be invoiced on a single invoice.

Paths and study modules

You can pay for path and study module when you enroll or they can be invoiced in two installment. The first invoice is sent via mail at the beginning of the studies and the second invoice 4 months after the start of the studies.

If a path or study module includes a separate selection procedure, you will be obliged to pay and you will be charged only after your selection has been confirmed and you have accepted the study place. If you are placed on a waiting list, you will be obliged to pay and you will be charged only after you have accepted a study place that becomes available.

Cancellations

All cancellations must be made using the cancellation link provided in the message confirming your enrolment. For refunds and cancellation of invoices, you must contact avoinamk [at] metropolia.fi (avoinamk[at]metropolia[dot]fi) immediately after cancelling your studies.

Cancellations of individual courses and NonStop studies:

Enrolment for individual courses and all NonStop studies, including NonStop paths, is binding and you cannot cancel it free of charge. The fee must be paid in full.

Cancellations of path and study module:

You can cancel your enrolment for path or study module, except for NonStop path or NonStop module, free of charge at least 7 days before the studies begin. If you cancel later than this, we will charge the fee for the academic term that has already begun. The fee for NonStop studies must be paid in full.

Exceptions:

• You can cancel your enrolment for an individual course free of charge if you receive a study place in a degree at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences or for a study path or study module at Metropolia's Open UAS, as long as you cancel before the start of the course.
• If you apply for an exemption from the fee for health reasons, an exemption may be granted based on a medical certificate. A condition for the exemption is that the medical condition recorded on the medical certificate prevents the completion of the studies. Exemptions from fees for health reasons are considered on a case-by-case basis. In path and study module, an exemption may also be granted on the basis of parental leave.

If Metropolia University of Applied Sciences cancels the studies, no fee will be charged and any fees already paid will be refunded. As a general rule, studies are cancelled only for a compelling reason.
