Metropolia's guidelines concerning coronavirus

Application period: 1 - 3 February 2021 at 3 pm

The Application on the Basis of International Higher Education Studies is aimed at those who are interested in Metropolia's English-language Bachelor of Health Care degree programmes and have completed an appropriate post-secondary qualification in relevant field.

The degree programmes are designed for upgrading certain post-secondary qualifications to Finnish higher education degrees. The scope of the studies to be completed will be less than the standard scope of the degree, because the degree that gives the eligibility to apply will be accredited to some extent as part of the studies on the basis of an assessment of competence.

Application must be submitted at Studyinfo.fi between 1 - 3 February 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

Application process step-by-step

  1. Check the eligibility requirements

  2. Choose your degree programme of interest
    You can submit only one application and apply to only one degree programme per application period. Please note that your choice of degree program is binding after the application period has ended. To check the degree programme options, please click "degree programmes" below.
     
  3. Check what documents you need to provide during the application process
    For more information, please click "required documents" below.
     
  4. Submit the online application at Studyinfo.fi before the application period ends
    Make sure that you have all the required documents with you when you start filling out the application form.
     
  5. Check your e-mail frequently and keep your contact information up-to-date
    Make sure that you receive the e-mail confirmation that will be sent to you automatically within 24 hours from submitting the application form. If you do not receive the e-mail confirmation please contact the Admission Services (admissions [at] metropolia.fi). Once the application has been submitted, you can return to you application to edit your information or attach documents by using the link provided in the application confirmation email or the My Studyinfo -service if you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card. Please note that the degree programme can be changed during the application period only.
     
  6. Get ready for the interview
    All eligible applicants will be invited for an interview. Interview invitations will be sent to the email address provided on the application form one week before the interviews at the latest. For more information, please click "interviews" below.
     
  7. Keep an eye on your e-mail
    You will be contacted via e-mail for example when:
    - your application is found insufficient (you will be given 7 days to complete your application)
    - you are invited to the entrance examination
    - you are offered a study place
     
  8. Confirm the study place if one is offered to you
    The study place must be confirmed by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of the student selection by 3 pm (local time in Finland). For more information, please click "confirming the study place" below.
     
  9. Get ready for the studies
    Take care of all the arrangements necessary (e.g. Visa and residence permit application, accommodation, insurances etc.) immediately after receiving the admission notification. For more information, please click "starting the studies" below.

Degree programmes

The following degree programmes are available via the Application on the Basis of International Higher Education Studies:

Eligibility requirements

In this application process the eligibility requirements differ from the standard eligibility requirements (Polytechnic Act 932/2014, 25 §) because the degree programmes which are available via this application are designed specifically for upgrading the below mentioned international post-secondary degrees to Finnish higher education degrees. For the same reason the scope of the studies to be completed will be less than the standard scope of the degree, because the degree that gives the eligibility to apply will be accredited to some extent as part of the studies on the basis of an assessment of competence.

Each degree programme has its own eligibility requirements as described below:

Bachelor of Health Care in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (top-up)

To be eligible, the applicant must have completed one of the following qualifications in such a way that copies/pictures of the official certificates proving that the required degree completed can be uploaded as an attachment to the online application at Studyinfo.fi by 10 February 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland):

  • Advanced Diploma in Biomedical Sciences (duration 3 years after completion of an upper secondary qualification) completed at International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) in Sri Lanka.
  • Some other qualification completed at an accredited educational institution in Sri Lanka with an extent, content and level that corresponds to the above mentioned degree.

No discretionary admission. Admitted students’ eligibility will be verified.

Bachelor of Health Care in Nursing (top-up)

To be eligible, the applicant must have completed one of the following qualifications in such a way that copies/pictures of the official certificates proving that the required degree completed can be uploaded as an attachment to the online application at Studyinfo.fi by 10 February 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland):

  • Advanced Diploma in General Nursing (duration 3 years after completion of an upper secondary qualification) completed at International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) in Sri Lanka.
  • Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (duration 3 years after completion of an upper secondary qualification) awarded by the State Board of Nursing and Midwifery or an equivalent in India.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (duration 4 years after completion of an upper secondary qualification) awarded by a local examination board or other similar official body in Philippines.
  • Some other qualification completed at an accredited educational institution in Sri Lanka, India or Philippines with an extent, content and level that corresponds to some of the above mentioned degrees.

No discretionary admission. Admitted students’ eligibility will be verified.

Bachelor of Health Care in Physiotherapy (top-up)

To be eligible, the applicant must have completed one of the following qualifications in such a way that copies/pictures of the official certificates proving that the required degree completed can be uploaded as an attachment to the online application at Studyinfo.fi by 10 February 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland):

  • Advanced Diploma in Physiotherapy (duration 3 years after completion of an upper secondary qualification) completed at International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) in Sri Lanka.
  • Some other qualification completed at an accredited educational institution in Sri Lanka with an extent, content and level that corresponds to the above mentioned degree.

No discretionary admission. Admitted students’ eligibility will be verified.

Metropolia reserves the right to ask for additional clarifications from the applicant, the awarding body, or the local agent if necessary in order to verify the degree.

Health requirements

Those applying to study within Health Care and Social Services must have sufficient health and functional capacity to be capable of completing practical assignments and work placement periods as part of the studies.

In addition, those applying to the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences must have adequate vision to work on a microscope and normal colour vision. Those admitted to the programme are required to submit a certificate provided by an ophthalmologist, optician or optometrist at the beginning of their studies as instructed by the university of applied sciences. The university of applied sciences may cancel admission if an applicant fails to submit such a certificate by the specified deadline, or if an applicant cannot be considered fit to study on the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences based on the certificate provided.

Required documents

The following documents must be uploaded as an attachment to the online application at Studyinfo.fi by 10 February 2021 at 3 pm:

  • Official certificates proving the required degree has been completed (check the required degrees in chapter eligibility). An interim certificate of completion issued by the educational institution is accepted if an official diploma or degree certificate cannot be obtained by 10 February 2021 at 3 pm due the action of the authorities; or for a similar reason.
  • Possible documents exempting from the tuition fee.
  • Translation into Finnish, Swedish or English in connection with the original document if the original document is written in a language other than Finnish, Swedish or English. The translation must be made by an official translator and bear the name, signature and stamp of the translator.

A document uploaded to the online application can be a scanned file or a good quality image taken for example by a cell phone camera. If eligibility cannot be assessed due to missing attachments, a request to complete the attachments will be sent to the applicant by using the e-mail address provided in the application form. The applicant shall be given 7 days time to complete the application. Once the application has been submitted, an applicant can return to his or her application to edit his or her information or attach documents using the link provided in the application confirmation email or the My Studyinfo -service if the applicant has a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card.

If the required certificates are not provided by the given deadline, the application will be rejected. Documents delivered after the deadline will not be considered. Possible delays or problems in getting the required certificates in time do not take away applicant's responsibility of delivering all the required documents by the deadline.

The study place is conditional until Metropolia has checked the school and other relevant certificates. Metropolia may withdraw the admission, if an applicant has given false information or does not deliver all the required documents by the deadline.

Interviews

All eligible applicants will be interviewed. The invitations will be sent to the email address provided on the application form one week before the interviews at the latest.

The interviews will be held online between 22 - 26 March 2021 and graded on a scale of 0-50 points and the minimum point score is 10 points. Student selections will be made on the basis of the points received from the interview.

If you need individual arrangements in an entrance examination (e.g. extra time, technical aid, or other special arrangement) due to an injury, illness, reading disability, or other special reason, you must submit an application for the individual arrangements within 7 days from the end of the application period by 3 pm (local time in Finland). If an obstacle requiring individual arrangements arises or is discovered after the application deadline, you must contact Metropolia's Admission Services immediately. Applications sent after this deadline will only be considered in acute cases if possible. Metropolia needs reasonable time to consider and arrange the special arrangement and therefore, individual arrangements cannot be granted if the request arrives at too short notice. Further instructions on individual arrangements available on Metropolia's web site.

Student selections

Student selections will be made on the basis of the interviews. In order for an applicant to be considered for student selection, he or she must obtain at least 10 points in the interview. Study places are offered to the most successful applicants in the order of points. Number of study places offered will be published at Studyinfo.fi by the beginning of the application period. 

Student selection results will published approximately at the beginning of April 2021. All applicants will be sent an e-mail notifying the admission result right after the results have been published. 

If you are accepted to several degree programmes in Finland you must choose which place you wish to confirm because you are allowed to accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term. Further information on the One Study Place Per Term Provision is available at Studyinfo.fi.

If you are accepted, you must confirm the study place by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the publication of the student selection at 3 pm (local time in Finland), otherwise the study place will be cancelled. More information on confirming the study place can be found at Studyinfo.fi or by clicking "confirming the study place" below.

The reserve list status will be valid until 2 August 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland), after which no applicants placed on reserve list can be granted admission.

Please note that Metropolia may withdraw the admission, if you have given false information or do not deliver all the required documents by the deadline.

A person who has applied to become a student of Metropolia may present a written appeal to the Legal Protection Board of Metropolia within fourteen (14) days as of the publication date of the admissions results. For more information please contact the Admission Services (contact details of the Admission Services) and read the appeal instructions.

Confirming the study place

  1. Accept your chosen study place by the deadline
    You can be accepted to several degree programmes and you can choose which place you wish to confirm. However please note that you can accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term. Further information on the One Study Place Per Term Provision is available at Studyinfo.fi. When you have been accepted to a study programme, you will receive an email. You need to accept the study place by the given deadline or you will lose your place. Applicants must accept their study places by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the publication of the student selection at 3 pm (local time in Finland). Accepting a study place is a binding choice, and you cannot cancel or change your choice later. When you accept a study place bindingly, all your other study programmes will automatically be cancelled. You can accept the offered study place via the link in the email that you will receive after the admission. If you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card, you can confirm the offered study place by using the My Studyinfo -service.
     
  2. Pay the tuition fee if applicable
    The tuition fee will concern all students who are not citizens of EU/EEA countries and who start their studies in English-taught Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. Invoice will be sent via e-mail within few days from the notification of admission. Students can be exempted from the tuition fee (e.g. on the basis of certain residence permits).
     
  3. Register for the academic year as present or absent
    The registration can be made only after the study place has been accepted and the possible tuition fee paid. You can register via the link in the email that you will receive after the admission. If you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card, you can register by using the My Studyinfo -service. It is not possible to start the studies before the registration. NB! If you register as absent you are required to deliver a document proving that you have legal grounds for the absence
     
  4. Sign the Student Agreement if applicable
    If you are not a citizen of an EU/EEA country and you are starting your studies in one of Metropolia's English-taught Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes, you must sign the Student Agreement sent you via e-mail and deliver it to Metropolia’s Student and Admission Services by 16 July 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public at 3 pm (local time in Finland). The agreement concerns Metropolia University of Applied Sciences tuition fees and scholarships and specifies the rights and obligations of all parties, and the terms under which the student may receive a scholarship for his/her studies at the Programme. For more information please contact Metropolia's Student and Admission Services.

Please note that in addition to the above, you need to take care of all the necessary practical arrangements such as:

  1. Apply for a residence permit immediately(!) after you have confirmed the study place
  2. Apply for a Finnish personal identity code if you do not have one
  3. Arrange your accommodation
  4. Check your health insurance
  5. Find out when and where your studies start
  6. Plan your arrival to Finland

Starting the studies

All information on when, where and how to start the studies is available on the web page Information for New Student. Instructions will not be sent directly to new students.

Study certificates, student discount documents, user ID and password etc. can be given to you on the first day of your studies (orientation days) at the earliest. Until then you can use your acceptance letter in order to verify your study place e.g. when applying for student housing, visa or residence permit.

By downloading the Tuudo mobile app, you can use various Metropolia web services easily on your smart phone. By using Tuudo's student ID you can also get several student discounts for different purposes. Tuudo is free for all Metropolia students.

Please note, finding suitable accommodation in Helsinki area can be challenging. Therefore, apply accommodation right away after receiving the notification of admission. You can either apply accommodation from HOAS or from the private market.
