In this major, students gain a broad understanding of design and communication. The studies cover typography, verbal and visual marketing communications, advertising, publication and editorial design, corporate and product identity design, brand management, and service design. User-centered web and interface design, usability, information visualization, and sustainable development are also explored.
The programme provides students with a strong technical foundation and a comprehensive understanding of the design process and its associated responsibilities, including sustainability, ethics, and equality. Skills such as commercial awareness, presentation abilities, and working under pressure are developed. The studies encourage students to become future-oriented problem solvers, ready to create responsible, effective, and innovative visual communication solutions.
Students work on real-life projects both independently and in teams, often in collaboration with companies and organizations.
Graduates earn the title of Bachelor of Culture and Arts (Design) and are qualified to work as visual communication designers in a wide range of roles and industries: design and advertising agencies, publishing houses, media companies, or as freelance entrepreneurs. Typical job titles include Graphic Designer, Visual Designer, Illustrator, Art Director, Brand Designer, or Service Designer.
This major is taught mainly in Finnish and is available as full-time daytime studies. Teaching takes place in Helsinki at the Arabia Campus.
