Additional studies for obtaining the right to practise as a nurse in Finland
for nursing graduates from abroad.

Additional studies for nurses are aimed at persons who have completed a Bachelor's degree in nursing abroad and who are applying from Valvira the right to practise as a nurse in Finland.
The goal of the studies is to achieve a competence level required for working as a nurse in Finland, including the competence in accordance with the professional qualification directive (2005/36/EC).
Content
- Advise on the process of applying for practice rights
- Additional studies and internships required by Valvira for qualifying as a nurse. In the beginning of the studies there is an evaluation of competence, in which a detailed study plan and internships needed are determined.
- Career coaching and working life cooperation
Studies
The studies consist of four sections, into which Finnish language studies are integrated. The duration of the studies is approximately 12 months, but it might vary due to additional studies or additional internships, if required. Additional requirements are determined in the evaluation of competence before starting the studies.
A language of tuition is Finnish. Studies include blended forms of teaching: on-campus teaching, online teaching and independent online studies. On-campus teaching is organized at Metropolia Myllypuro campus, Myllypurontie 1, 00920 Helsinki. Classes are scheduled approximately once a week.

- Finnish language and the basics of nursing qualification, 10 ECTS, 29.1.-18.3.2024
- Medication management, 10 ECTS, 13.3.-20.5.2024
- Clinical nursing, 10 ECTS, 22.5.-13.9.2024
- Training, 10 ECTS, Autumn 2024

Selection criteria
- Bachelor's level nursing degree completed abroad
- Finnish language skills at level B1 or above (CEFR). You may demonstrate sufficient language proficiency with a National Certificate of Language Proficiency at least the intermediate level test (YKI test) so that all skills areas are at least 3. The test result must not be more than two years old.
- A student must have a laptop with a web camera, which is suitable for online learning, and headphones with a microphone
- A student must have a permit to work in Finland
Tuition and other fees
- The studies are free of charge.
- The participant is responsible for Valvira's application and related decision and document fees.
