Joint application, autumn 2021

The Finnish joint application is a national application procedure the Finnish education institutions use when selecting new students to general upper secondary schools, vocational institutions and higher education institutions. Please read more about the Finnish application system at Studyinfo.fi.

The autumn joint application for higher education degree programmes offered in English begins on 1 September 2021 at 8 am and ends on 15 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland). Please find more detailed timetable below in section "application timetable".

All information is subject to change until the beginning of the application period (all rights reserved).

Application process step-by-step

1. Choose your degree programmes of interest 

Check the education offering at Studyinfo.fi and choose 1-6 higher education degree programmes to which you want to apply. Metropolia's degree programmes available via this application process are listed below in section "Degree programmes". Please note, that you cannot change the degree programmes or their order of preference after the application period has ended.

2. Check the degree-programme specific eligibility and admission requirements at Studyinfo.fi

The eligibility and admission criteria may vary depending on the degree programme and therefore, it is important to read carefully the admission criteria for each degree programme you have chosen. The degree-programme specific admission criteria are available at Studyinfo.fi.

3. Check what documents you need to complete the online application at Studyinfo.fi

You need to have the required documents with you when fill in the application. The list of required documents can be found below in section "Required documents".

4. Submit your online application at Studyinfo.fi before the application period ends

The joint application must be submitted by 15 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland)

Make sure that you receive the e-mail confirmation the joint application system sends you automatically within 24 hours from submitting the application. If you do not receive the e-mail confirmation, you can contact any of the admission services of your application options.

The e-mail confirmation contains a link to edit your application at Studyinfo.fi. Please note that the degree programmes and their order of preference can be changed during the application period only.

5. Check your e-mail frequently and keep your contact information up-to-date

You will be contacted via e-mail if:

  • your application is found insufficient (you will be given 7 days to complete your application)
  • you are invited to the entrance examination
  • you are offered a study place

6. Get ready for the entrance examination

If the degree programme has an entrance examination you will receive an invitation to the entrance examination via e-mail approximately one week prior to the entrance examination. More information below in section "Entrance examinations".

If you need individual arrangements for the entrance examination due to an injury, illness, reading disability, or other special reason, please read the instructions for applying for individual arrangements for the entrance examination.

7. Check the My Studyinfo -service frequently and follow your e-mail

Results of the joint application will published at My Studyinfo -service by 26 November 2021 at the latest. If you are offered a study place, you will also receive an e-mail notification. More information below in section "student selections".

8. Confirm the study place if one is offered to you

The study place must be confirmed by completing the following four steps by 3 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of the student selection by 3 pm (local time in Finland):

  1. Accept the study place by using the My Studyinfo -service or the link you have received in the notification of admission e-mail.
  2. Pay the tuition fee if applicable (the invoice will be sent via email within a few days of the admission notification). 
  3. Register as present or absent for the academic year by using the My Studyinfo -service or the link you have received in the notification of admission e-mail. NB! If you register as absent you are required to deliver a document proving that you have legal grounds for the absence.
  4. Upload the rest of the documents required to prove eligibility to your online application at Studyinfo.fi, unless you have already done so. You can enter the application by using the My Studyinfo -service or the link you have received in the confirmation e-mail.

9. Get ready for the studies

Prepare to study by checking the material for new students. At the webpage you find the degree specific information such as starting date and time of the studies and other important information for the beginning of your studies.

Metropolia offers only one English-language degree programme in autumn 2021 joint application:

The following documents/information will be required during the application process:

Finnish general upper secondary school leaving certificate ("lukion päättötodistus"): 

  • qualification completed before applying: documents required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
  • qualification yet to be completed (graduates of autumn 2021): documents required by 27 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of admission at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

Finnish Matriculation Examination ("ylioppilastutkinto"):

  • qualification completed between 1990 - 2021: no documents required as the information is obtained automatically from the
    national database for educational information (Koski).
  • qualification completed before 1990: documents required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

Finnish vocational upper secondary school qualification ("ammatillinen perustutkinto, ammattitutkinto tai erikoisammattitutkinto"):

  • qualification completed between 2018 - 2021 (excluding the competence-based qualifications "näyttötutkinnot" and qualifications completed in Åland): no documents required as the information is obtained automatically from the national database for educational information (Koski).
  • qualification completed before 2018 (excluding the competence-based qualifications "näyttötutkinnot" and qualifications completed in Åland): documents required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm  (local time in Finland).
  • competence-based qualifications ("näyttötutkinto"): documents required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm  (local time in Finland).
  • qualifications completed in Åland: 

Finnish post-secondary higher vocational qualification (opisto-/ammatillisen korkea-asteen tutkinto"):

Finnish higher education qualification:

  • qualification completed between 2003 - 2021: no documents required as the information is obtained automatically from the national database for educational information (Koski).
  • qualification completed before 2003: documents required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

International Baccalaureate:

  • qualification completed before applying: final IB Diploma (the IB Certificate does not give the eligibility to apply) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
  • qualification yet to be completed (graduates of autumn 2021):
    • predicted grades or an equivalent interim certificate required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
    • transcript of grades (final grades) required by 27 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of admission at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
    • final IB Diploma (the IB Certificate does not give the eligibility to apply) required by the beginning of the studies.

  • qualification completed before applying: final Reiferprüfung / DIA diploma/certificate (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in
    Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
  • qualification yet to be completed (graduates of autumn 2021):
    • predicted grades or an equivalent interim certificate (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
    • final Reiferprüfung/DIA diploma/certificate (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 27 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of admission at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

Foreign secondary level qualification:

  • qualification completed before applying: the final diploma/certificate or an interim certificate on graduation issued by the educational institution
    (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
  • qualification yet to be completed (graduates of autumn 2021):
    • an interim certificate on graduation issued by the educational institution (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
    • final diploma/certificate or an interim certificate on graduation issued by the educational institution (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 27 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days from the notification of admission at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

NB! If an applicant is a refugee or in a refugee-like situation and is unable to submit documentary evidence of his/her qualification, he/she may instead submit the asylum decision or residence permit issued on the basis of a need for protection of refugees or applicants in a refugee-like situation. The asylum decision / residence permit must be submitted to the admission services as an attachment to the Verification of Educational Background form by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

Foreign higher education qualification:

  • qualification completed before applying: the final diploma/certificate or an interim certificate on graduation issued by the educational
    institution (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
  • qualification yet to be completed (graduates of autumn 2021):
    • transcript of records issued by the educational institution (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 22 September 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland).
    • final diploma/certificate or an interim certificate on graduation issued by the educational institution (+ an official translation of all the documents that are not in Finnish, English or Swedish) required by 27 December 2021 at 3 pm or within 7 days from the notification of admission at 3 pm (local time in Finland).

NB! If an applicant is a refugee or in a refugee-like situation and is unable to submit documentary evidence of his/her qualification, he/she may instead submit the asylum decision or residence permit issued on the basis of a need for protection of refugees or applicants in a refugee-like situation. Documents proving the legal grounds for absence on the fist year

Those who register as absent for the first academic year are required to deliver to documents proving the legal ground for their absence by the deadline for accepting the study place. More information concerning the legal grounds for absence on the first year.

Health Status Report

Those who have been offered a study place in the field of Health Care and Social Services, and who have stated on their applications that they have health issues or equivalent, are required to deliver a health report by the deadline for accepting the study place. More information concerning the health requirements.

Please note:

  • Most of the required documents must be uploaded to the online application at Studyinfo.fi and if not, it has been mentioned above in connection with the document. A photo taken with a mobile phone or camera is acceptable.
     
  • Documents are not required in case the required information appears in the Finnish national database of educational data (Koski). If your educational data show in the national database it is enough for you to send viewing rights to your educational information at the national database. This can be done by logging in to the My Studyinfo -service (My completed studies). The right to view educational data is granted as follows (the service is only available in Finnish/Swedish):
    • select "jaa suoritustietojasi"
    • select the degree(s) for which you want to give the viewing rights, 
    • check the validity of the link (the link must be valid for at least 6 months after sending the application), and
    • attach the link(s) to you application at Studyinfo.fi.
  • The International Baccalaureate certificate does not give eligibility for higher education in Finland. In order to be eligible to apply and applicant must provide a copy an International Baccalaureate diploma awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
     
  • If the document is not in Finnish, Swedish or English language, an official translation into one of these languages must be provided by the deadline given for the document in question.
     
  • Documents delivered after the deadline will not be considered. Possible delays or problems in getting the required certificates in time do not take away your responsibility of delivering all the required documents so that they are received by the  by the deadline.
     
  • The study place is conditional until the polytechnic/ UAS has checked your school and other relevant certificates. Metropolia may withdraw the admission, if you have given false information or do not deliver all the required documents by the deadline.

Entrance examination

Entrance examination for the Bachelor's degree programme in Nursing

Please note! The information below is preliminary and subject to change until the beginning of the application period.

The entrance examination is arranged in cooperation with TAMKUAS (Bachelor of Health care in Nursing aimed at immigrants). Results of the entrance examination will be considered in student selection of both Metrpolia's and TAMK's degree programmes in Nursing. 

Applicants will be invited to one entrance examination only, either to TAMK or to Metropolia depending on which one is marked the applicant’s highest priority on the application form. The entrance examination will take place between 25 - 26 October 2021 at in Metropolia it will be arranged at Metropolia's Myllypuro campus.

The examination consists of following parts:  

  • Part 1: English language test: evaluation pass or fail (to pass the English language test, the applicant must hold a minimum level of B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). 
  • Part 2: Math test: evaluation 0-20 points, minimum 8 points 
  • Part 3: Academic reading skills test: evaluation 0-20 points, minimum 8 points 
  • Part 4: Study skills test: evaluation 0-25 points, minimum 10 points 

To pass the exam, the applicant must get at least the minimum score of each part of the examination as described above.

Further information will be given in the entrance examination invitation, which will be sent one week prior to the entrance examination at latest to the e-mail address given on the application.

 

 

 

 

Student selection

Information on admission results of the joint application to higher education can be found at Studyinfo.fi.

Results of the joint application will published by 26 November 2021 at the latest. By this day all applicants will be sent an e-mail notifying the admission result. If you have Finnish online banking credentials, a Finnish electronic ID-card or mobile certificate can check your results at My Studyinfo -service.

Please note that contrary to the first joint application of spring 2021, in autumn joint application you have to place the degree programmes in order of preference on the application form. This order is binding and you cannot change it after the application period has ended. If you are accepted, you will be offered a study place highest on your order of preference list to which you have enough points to be accepted.

If you are accepted, you must confirm the study place by 3 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public by 3 pm (local time in Finland), otherwise the study place will be cancelled. More information on confirming the study place can be found at Studyinfo.fi.

The reserve list status will be valid until 14 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland), after which no applicants placed on reserve list can be granted admission.

Please note that the study place is conditional until Metropolia has checked your school and other relevant certificates. Metropolia may withdraw the admission, if you have given false information or do not deliver all the required documents by the deadline.

Please also note that those applying to study within Health Care and Social Services must have sufficient health and functional capacity to be capable of completing practical assignments and work placement periods as part of the studies. The admission can be cancelled if the above mentioned health requirements are not met. More information on health requirements can be found Metropolia website.

A person who has applied to become a student of Metropolia may present a written appeal to the Legal Protection Board of Metropolia within fourteen (14) days as of the publication date of the admissions results. For more information please contact the Admission Services (contact details of the Admission Services) and read the appeal instructions.

Confirming the study place

In order to confirm a study place you must complete all the following steps by the given deadlines:

  1. Accept the study place at Studyinfo.fi
    Applicants admitted by 26 November 2021 must accept their study places by 3 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) and applicants admitted after 26 November 2021 must confirm their study places within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public by 3 pm (local time in Finland). You can accept the offered study place with the link in the email that you have received. If you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card, you can confirm the offered study place in the My Studyinfo -service. Accepting a study place is a binding choice, and you cannot cancel or change your choice later. When you accept a study place bindingly, all your other study programmes will automatically be cancelled.
     
  2. Pay the tuition fee if applicable
    The tuition fee will concern all students who are not citizens of EU/EEA countries and who start their studies in English-taught Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. Invoice will be sent via e-mail within few days from the notification of admission. Students can be exempted from the tuition fee (e.g. on the basis of certain residence permits).
     
  3. Register for the academic year as present or absent at Studyinfo.fi
    The enrollment can be made only after the study place has been accepted and the possible tuition fee paid. It is not possible to start the studies before the enrollment. NB! If you register as absent you are required to deliver a document proving that you have the legal grounds for the absence.
     
  4. Sign the Student Agreement if applicable
    If you are not a citizen of an EU/EEA country and you are starting your studies in one of Metropolia's English-taught Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes, you must sign the Student Agreement (pdf) and deliver it to Metropolia’s Student and Admission Services via e-mail (admissions [at] metropolia.fi) by 3 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public by 3 pm (local time in Finland). The Student Agreement concerns Metropolia University of Applied Sciences tuition fees and scholarships and specifies the rights and obligations of all parties, and the terms under which the student may receive a scholarship for his/her studies at the degree programme. 
     
  5. Deliver the documents required for confirming the admission
    Deliver documents giving eligibility for the degree programme in question by 3 December 2021 at 3 pm (local time in Finland) or within 7 days of the results of the selections being made public by 3 pm (local time in Finland), unless you already have done so previously during the application process in question. You can enter the application via the same link you used for accepting the study place at Studyinfo or by using the My Studyinfo -service. Admission is conditional until Metropolia’s Student and Admission Services have checked all the relevant certificates. Please note that it is not necessary to submit a certificate for the information displayed on the Finnish national database for educational information Koski (check your data at the Koski service). 

Starting the studies

All information on when, where and how to start the studies is available in page Information for New Student. Instructions will not be sent directly to new students.

Study certificates, student discount documents, user ID and password etc. can be given to you on the first day of your studies (orientation days) at the earliest. Until then you can use your acceptance letter in order to verify your study place e.g. when applying for student housing, visa or residence permit.

By downloading the Tuudo mobile app, you can use various Metropolia web services easily on your smart phone. By using Tuudo's student ID you can also get VR, HSL, Matkahuolto and Kela student discounts. Tuudo is free for all Metropolia students.

Starting in January 2021, students attending a university of applied sciences who are entitled to use the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (YTHS) have to pay a healthcare fee to Kela. No bill will be sent on the healthcare fee, and thus you have to pay the fee on your own initiative. The due dates are determined based on the date on which you have registered as attending. For the autumn term, the due date is 30 September provided you have registered as attending by then. How to pay the healthcare fee in higher education. 

Please note, finding suitable accommodation in Helsinki area can be challenging. Therefore, apply accommodation right away after receiving the acceptance letter. You can either apply accommodation from HOAS or from the private market.

It is imperative that you attend the orientation days at the beginning of the studies. Starting your studies late can seriously affect the progress of your studies.
